Book Excerpt

Silently, she stole across the street, but instead of going to the front door, she put her ear up to the wall and listened. From somewhere buried inside her a primordial instinct welled up, which frightened her more than the storm brewing overhead. With her body close to the Turnwell’s house and her chest facing out, she advanced to the back. Trembling sobs alternated with short, shallow breaths told her ears that a small child was wailing inside. Her eyes caught sight of a dim light shining from the door which had been left open a crack. As she slid along the wall of the house, steps unfolded in front of her, leading up their back deck. She cocked her head, glancing towards the window and slowly progressed up the steps without a creek, something like a cat stalking its prey. As she reached the final step, she melted along the wall until her head became flush against the door frame. Taking a deep and silent breath, her guts inside wrenching and twisting, she peered inside the cracked door, gasping at the scene before her eyes. Eilida tore down the steps at warp speed, descending the tree stuffed mountain, while tears cascaded violently down her cheeks.
Thoughts raged through her brain churning and contorting. While she was on auto pilot, she continued to charge downhill without any thoughts as to where she was going. The horrific scene inside the house played like a broken record in her head. Tree branches tore at her clothes and scratched at her flesh as she dashed down the ridge. She barely felt them stinging as her mind was too consumed by the vivid spectacle she had witnessed inside the Turnwell’s home. Bleeding gashes covered her arms, face, and legs. Gnarled tree branches grew arms jutting into the path before her eyes. The rain began to pour across her forehead, leaving flowing rivulets washing away her tears and blood, leaving chunks of hair plastered against her face.
The solid earth had become bombarded with water rushing hard under her feet, causing her to slip in its wetness. She reached her hand out for something to grab hold of, but the trees curled in their disfigured appendages while her feet slipped further beneath, digging into the wet savage ground. Desperate mud covered hands penetrated the sludge groping for a large tree root. Her feet sank further into the ooze until they hit a large rock, sending Eilida flying one end over the other, jostled like an unwanted toy, down the ridge. Tree trunks and small rocks got their licks in bouncing her to and fro. The inertia of her body halted by a large boulder nestled beside the river, leaving her petite frame motionless against the flooding rains. A mess of blood curled and flowed from her head, leaving tributaries along her cheek. Shreds of fabric that used to be clothing clung to her bloody skin as the shadowy moonlight bathed her immobile and unconscious body.

Elle  Please tell our readers about you –
I live in Florida U.S. and love the beach. Living on a peninsula is great since we have no shortage of beaches. I’m a mother of two beautiful girls and a grandmother of three amazing grandchildren. My life’s been filled with insane moments that gives me the inspiration to continue writing.

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Coffee. The smell of fresh brewed coffee. I prepare my cup, lots of sugar and a bit of creamer than sit down with my tablet and scroll through my email, check my social medias. I have three grandchildren so I adore all the cute posts of them. Life’s even better the days I spend time with them.

If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
I’m a huge Ian Somerhalder fan but since he just got married my interest has dwindled. So instead of the sexiest man alive I think I’d like to meet Jack Nicholson. I’m a huge fan and admire his versatility as an actor. I’m curious what he’s like in person. Is he down to Earth? Is he crazy?

What’s the story behind your latest book?
Eilida is an ordinary new adult, college, pat time job, best-friend roommate then tragedy strikes. She see’s something that makes her run through the woods during a thunderstorm. She slips, falls and hits her head. The premise for Eye of the Storm and the Ruthless Storm series is my worst nightmares rolled into an earth shattering story that leaves the reader wondering. To lighten it up there is some dark humor and silly innuendos.

Tell us your writing process.
When the idea for a story comes to me I write. I don’t plan. I’m not a planner in life. I’m more a fly-by-the-seat of my pants person. My writing process is the same. Once I start writing I let the characters take control. My stories never follow or end with my original idea for the story. Next, I wait months or even years then read back through and develop the plot and characters more. I look for gaps and underdeveloped areas. After I finish that it’s onto beta readers and editing.

When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
I think always. When I was a kid my sisters and I would makeup crazy stories. We had a tape recorder with a mic (I’m showing my age) and we recorded the stories. I spent hours writing and drawing my own comic strips as a teenager I wrote poetry. As an adult I started writing novels although didn’t start publishing until two years ago.

Tell us about your main character:
Eilida is the girl who would rather have her head buried in a book – true crime preferably but she’s not that picky. Her drool worthy and intelligent chemistry partner Jay is her love interest. She’s not sure about commitment and won’t admit how much she truly adores him. She writes an advice column, Dear Delilah, for the Chesterville Star. This allows her a flexible schedule and a chance to get her feet wet in the news industry. Her career goal in life once she finishes college is to be a news reporter. She’s pretty much an ordinary girl with an ordinary life until tragedy strikes.

What are you working on next?
Right now I’m working on Calm Before the Storm Evan’s Sins volume 2 in the Ruthless Storm Trilogy. Instead of telling you about it here is an excerpt. “A loud primordial scream startled Mrs. Zander, her body unfroze, and she ran, stumbling on the mushy ground, falling to her hands and knees. She crawled to the street, stood and ran to her house, throwing the door open in panic. She didn’t stop running until she reached her bed and fell onto her husband. “Fra… Fra… across… the… ”

Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?
I make people laugh. I developed this talent as the middle child to keep the peace between my sisters. When I made them laugh they forgot what they were fighting over. I no longer need to keep the peace but still love saying crazy stuff that makes people laugh.

Who are your favorite authors?
V.C. Andrews original series and books may always top my list but I have found quite a few indies who rival her in my opinion. I like action and suspense. A few indies work I really enjoy are Marcha Fox, Susanne Leist, John Reinhard Dizon, Kim Cormack, Mia Bishop. I’m currently reading The Purple Morrow by Dyane Forde. I’m going to have to add her to my favorite indies list. The Purple Morrow is incredible.

What do you like to do with your free time?
I’m an avid reader so when I get spare time I enjoy reading. I also enjoy spending time with my children and grandchildren and being lazy with my boyfriend.

Tell us about your plans for upcoming books.
Baby Girl Box Set releases July 13th but the paperback is already available. The story is about Cleo. Her mother disappears when she is twelve and with no other family available to turn to she takes to the streets and does what she needs to survive. Along the way she meets her first love who she never forgets and secrets about her past. A past she didn’t know existed. It is her tenacity that drives her towards finding the truth.

Any final thoughts?
A huge thank you for this amazing interview and allowing me to share my work with your wonderful followers.
