About the Book

Title: The Matriarch Matrix
Author: Maxime Trencavel
Genre: Science Fiction, Adventure

Matriarch11

The Matriarch Matrix – A speculative fiction novel of origins, faith, passion, and the pursuit of peace.

It was always his destiny to save her. It was always her destiny to die. The fate of the world hangs on their choices…

The past foretells her future…

What does it take to change a loving child of peace into an assassin for a dangerous and powerful oligarch? Zara Khatum knows. Once a fighter for her Kurdish people, the memory of the atrocities inflicted by her captors has Zara seeking one thing: vengeance. But the voices of the ancients call to Zara. In the past, in another life, she knew the secrets of the artifact…

Twelve thousand years ago…

She is Nanshe, revered matriarch of the family she led away from the monsters of the north. In the land that would one day mark the treacherous border between Turkey and Syria, she created the temples at Gobleki Tepe and founded a dynasty, heirs to a powerful object. For millennia, Nanshe’s descendants have passed down the legend of the artifact: “The object can save. But only a man and woman together can guide the salvation of others.”

Heirs to destiny…

By fate or destiny, Zara is thrown in with Peter Gollinger, a quirky Californian from the other side of the world and the other side of everything she believes. But he, too, is heeding the voices of his ancestors. Joined by Jean-Paul, a former Jesuit priest, these three people—from wildly different religions and cultures—must find a way to work together to solve a twelve thousand-year-old mystery of the powerful object that spawned a faith. The world teeters on the precipice of war. The outcome depends on them. And one of them is living a lie.

The Matriarch Matrix is a rich and deeply layered epic story – a spiritual odyssey with a heartbeat of an action adventure. It may make you think, ponder, reflect upon where we came from and where we are going. It blends our past with a speculative future of things that are not so far-fetched. It blends the drama, the comedy, the romance, the tragedy of three protagonists with different cultures, traditions, and beliefs – a Sufi woman, a Jesuit priest, and an alien origin believing atheist. Their journeys separately and together will be a test of their respective faiths and their inner search for personal and family redemption.

EXCERPT

Walking down to his grandfather’s unit, Peter reflects upon Beverly’s
propositions. Maybe his grandfather will have further wisdom on the subject, he
muses as he enters his pappy’s room. A single room, as the restlessness of his
dreams has precluded his peaceful cohabitation with another elderly patient. His
grandfather is slightly elevated in bed, with an oxygen mask over a nasal cannula,
indicating he is under duress.
“Pappy, how are you today? Needing a little more oxygen this morning?”
Taking off his mask, Pappy, a bit short of breath, says, “Peter. My boy. A little
late today, aren’t we?”
“I was talking with Dr. Fontaine about a new project she’s working on.”
“Oh, the good doctor. Why can’t I have her as my physician? She’d be so much
better than that Dr. Elephant. She’s so much more compassionate and
understanding.”
“So I gather, Pappy. You two have been spending some quality time together.”
“I was simply trying to get her to understand how best to provide me
comfort.”
“So, I’ve heard, Pappy. How was your night? Anything clearer?”
“The same, Peter. The same. What I would give for a peaceful night. Peace.
Even the partial peace your grandmother provided. It isn’t so much to ask,”
Pappy groans. “As always, I awake knowing I dreamt something very important,
but I cannot piece it together. Ninety-three years of this. Ninety-one, if you don’t
count the years I couldn’t speak. And what about you? Can you remember
anything?”
Scratching his head, Peter stares out the window. “The same agony of not
being able to put my finger on that important something.” He turns and shivers.
“A darkness. An emptiness. A void. The same vagueness, but nothing specific.
That is, except for a gun.”
Pappy lurches up, very focused. “Peter, my boy, this is very important. This
moment. Tell me more.”
Peter moves closer to Pappy and helps him lean back to rest. “You know how
it is. Everything is so fuzzy. I’ve never remembered anything from these nightly
torments. But strangely, the past two mornings, it’s different. Maybe a gun, and a
woman. Dark hair?”
“Yes. Yes! Gun and dark hair, Peter,” Pappy gasps. He puts the oxygen mask
back on. “I’ve waited. Thirty years. For you and me. To have the same dream. And
you needed to save her.”
Shaking his head, Peter stares down at his pappy’s aged hands holding his
mask on. “I’m afraid I can’t save anyone. Even in my dreams.”
“Everything changes now that I know you and I have dreamed the same
images,” exclaims Pappy.
Peter pauses, processing that new fact. “Pappy, I was just down the hallway
with Dr. Fontaine, discussing the psychology of dreams. But she explained things
in such a simple way that I now understand how these theories might relate to
our disorder. She says ours are anxiety dreams. That we, our minds, are acting
out some repression. Freud would say it’s repressed lust for our mothers that
drives our dreams. Jung says it’s a sign that we’re trying to transform. We’re
driven by something that happened to our prehistoric ancestors.”
Peter stares at his grandfather. “What repressed conflict are we seeking to
resolve? What transformation are we seeking?”
Pappy takes Peter’s hand. “Peter, all we have is our family tradition to guide
us. Please, repeat it for me. Our only peace is in our faith in our tradition. That is
the so-called repressed conflict of Dr. Fontaine…and of Freud.”
Peter gulps. Putting on a very serious visage, he says, “The long-tailed star
came from the sky, and our lands became ice, and winter became forever. Only
the giants of the reindeer dominate. The bright star that never sets will be your
guide. Watch for the long-tailed star.”
“Good, my boy. The second part, now.”
“And be wary of the giants, the Reindeer People, for when they arrive, you
must flee and seek the mountains.”
Pappy, assuming the patriarchal appearance that has commanded Peter’s and
his father’s lives, says, “The third part.”
Nervous, Peter continues, “Follow the black object, for this will guide you as
you search for your new life.”
With deepening aggravation, Pappy gasps and admonishes Peter. “Boy, you
must. You must. You must not change anything. We have recited this from the
beginning of our line. As far back as my great-grandfather, and he said as far back
as his great-grandfather, we have passed down these oral traditions. We must
preserve them.” Pappy gasps again, and Peter helps put the mask on him.
From under the mask, Pappy mutters in slow, broken phrases, “Follow the
vision. And words. Of the black object. For this will guide you. As you seek your
new land.” He stops and waits for the oxygen to rebuild in his blood, then nods
for Peter to continue.
Peter mentally rehearses and finally recites, “Fourth part: Man and woman.
Only as the two together can you find peace. The object can save. You might see
in sleep, might hear.”
Pappy rests his head back and gasps. After several tense minutes, he removes
the mask. “Peter, forgive an old man if he repeats himself every time you visit.
But I find that if I don’t keep repeating myself, at my age I will begin to forget.
And as I do to you, my grandfather pounded into my head that we should never
forget.”

DEADSPEAK 2

BLURB:

DEADSPEAK2. The chilling new entry in the Deadspeak Mystery Series

Things look different when you’re dead.

It’s Halloween and a group of teens throw a party at Harbinger Falls’ most celebrated haunted estate. It’s all fun and games until a session with a Ouija board guides the partygoers to the body of a young girl hidden in the attic.

Detective Kimberly Trent is assigned the case and quickly discovers that all is not as it seems. First, there’s the connection between the death and a string of petnappings terrorizing the neighborhood. Then there’s the suicide note that only leaves more questions than answers. A visit from Kimberly’s ghostly friend Griff Lindon sheds an unwelcome light. It seems she’s had a run in with the newly deceased who tells her she’s been murdered.

This is the second in The Deadspeak Mysteries. The entries are meant to be read in sequential order and do not standalone. In each book, you’ll find a new murder for Kimberly Trent to solve. You’ll also find the continuing search for who murdered Kim’s sister Elizabeth. EXCERPT

“No, you can’t come over to explain! I know what I saw!”

Mia Chaukes, the pleasant girl with the quiet demeanor, was shouting. It was unusual for the sixteen-year-old to raise her voice or be this upset, but she wasn’t backing down. She couldn’t. Not after what she’d witnessed.

It went against everything she believed in.

Her eyes traveled the length of the pink walls. It had been her favorite color when she was younger and always put her in a good mood, but would it still work today?

She sought comfort from the color—and from the shelves lined with the vestiges of her past. Unicorns, teddy bears, and other stuffed toys were there with sunny smiles and arms outstretched for a hug, but they only served as a reminder that things had changed and would never be the same.

“Don’t you dare tell me that!” she blasted as more desperation came through the receiver … desperation and elaborate excuses.

Anything but the truth.

She wouldn’t be lied to … not anymore.

“Don’t you dare tell me I’m imagining things! I’ll hang up … I mean it!”

What would have happened if she hadn’t taken that way home? Or if she’d left earlier or later? Endless possibilities, one worse than the other, shot through her mind, each making her sick to her stomach. But before the nausea disappeared, an equally disturbing question rose to the surface.

What did happen?

 AuthorPhoto_DeadSpeak2

Born in the idyllic, sleepy town of Ithaca, NY, Ruth Bainbridge has been a lover of mysteries for her entire life.

Ever since a child, she has consumed detective stories at regular intervals, becoming enamored with all the superstars of crime. She loved nothing more than to match wits with the likes of Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Thomas Pitt, Lord Peter Wimsey, Richard Jury, and Edward X Delaney, becoming inspired by their brilliance. Hoping to emulate her writing idol’s achievements in dreaming up such characters, she started composing her own short stories.

However, life interfered with her plans of becoming the next hopeful to try a life of crime—on paper at least. Devoting herself to her marriage and the raising of four children, the empty nest syndrome gave her the impetus to return to her first love—murder.

Set in New York City in 1976, Snakes Can’t Run finds NYPD detective Robert Chow still haunted by the horrors of his past and relegated to tedious undercover work. When the bodies of two undocumented Chinese men are found under the Brooklyn Bridge underpass, Chow is drawn into the case. Most of the officers in his precinct are concerned with a terrorist group targeting the police, but Chow’s investigation puts him on the trail of a ring of ruthless human smugglers who call themselves the snakeheads. As Chow gets closer to solving the murder, dangerous truths about his own family’s past begin to emerge. EXCERPT

The mind is a funny thing. After I got on the wagon and fell in love with a girl, I started seeing my father out in the streets. I didn’t literally see his ghost walking around, but I’d see his nose in profile on another guy’s face. Sometimes I’d be walking behind someone who had his slouchy shuffle, his spotted ears, or the back of the head that looked like an elderly porcupine with spikes gone soft and white.

One time, a hand reached out to my shoulder and touched me exactly where he used to touch me from his chair after dinner to ask me to get him a beer from the fridge.

Of course it wasn’t my father. It was an older guy who wanted to know if I was the guy whose pictures used to be in all the Chinese newspapers. The man was almost completely bald and had two light brown spots on the top right of his head that looked like an imprint from a woman’s high-heeled shoe.

He called me the Sheriff of Chinatown. I tried to get away from him as soon as possible, but he was one of those people who liked to say good-bye and then ask another question just when you’re about to part. The guy ended up grabbing both of my hands twice before I was able to make the corner and get away. I checked that my wallet was still in my pocket, though, just in case he had been working me with a partner. I guess he was genuinely glad to meet me.

Book trailer

Thanks for being my guest. Tell us about you as a person.
I am a punk-rock kid. I grew up listening to Husker Du, Black Flag and other bands whose very names would not be appropriate to print on a family-oriented site. Apart from the music, I really love the attitude about it, that maybe you don’t know how to play your instrument or sing, but if you really want to be a band and make music, you’ve got no excuses. Later on, I had that same attitude when I wanted to write my first book. I dedicated myself to sitting down at that keyboard nearly every night for half a year to bang out a first draft.

If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
I wouldn’t need the whole day, but it would be great to split a pizza with Dashiell Hammett. He was a man of such integrity and a great writer to boot. I wonder what toppings he’d like. Maybe he’d eat it with a knife and fork.

What’s the story behind your latest book?
Snakes Can’t Run is the sequel to This Is a Bust, and is a continuation of the New York Chinatown mystery series set in the 70s. The cop narrator, Robert Chow, is on the hunt for snakeheads, human traffickers. He’s not going to like what he finds.

What is your writing process?
I listen to music, but nonvocal stuff. Surf and drag music is great because it’s so energetic. Instrumental jazz is awesome, too, and I’m a big supporter of WBGO in Newark–that station plays all the good stuff and it’s as close as any Internet connection.

Tell us about your main character:
Robert Chow is a Chinese American guy who fell in with the wrong crowd early on. He was drafted to serve in Vietnam and although he returned physically well, Chow still has PTSD. In the first book he had to solve himself to save his life. Now he’s able to help others.

If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role and why.
This is an answer loaded with landmines–I am friends with many Asian American actors who could very well play the lead. Can I demur and say that I would love for Mahershala Ali to play Chow’s African American partner? Ali has a quiet gravity that he showed in Moonlight and also a bit of playfulness embedded in his House of Cards character.

What are you working on next?
I write a mystery series set in Taipei for Soho Crime. So far, they’ve published Ghost Month and Incensed. I’m now on the third.

What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?
Don’t be a hypocrite–talk about the books and writers that you love, who maybe aren’t so well-known.

What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?
I really love this book The Secret Origins of the Bible by Tim Callahan. It details all these stories that have their origins in ancient Mesopotamia that didn’t become apparent until excavations and translations were made in the 20th century. It’s part mystery, part history, part fable and part faith. A great book.

Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?
I play bass, but not well. Oh, actually, I’m pretty good at Street Fighter II, the old arcade game. If we’re ever near a Street Fighter II cabinet, please challenge me!

You are given the choice of one super power. What super power would you have and why?
I’d want to be able to help young children see logic. I have a four-year-old who just doesn’t understand when I try to explain things to him!

List 5 things on your bucket list.

In no order: See those Incan walls; make it down to New Orleans for the Ponderosa Stomp; get a TV with 1080p display capability that still has an s-video port (I still have a laserdisc player); finish Panzer Dragoon Saga; organize the storage cage.

Where can readers find you on the web?
http://www.edlinforpresident.com

Any final thoughts?
Don’t consider this my final message. I’ll always be back. Have a great day, guys!

Book Excerpt

What did these strangers want? Billy fought the urge to scream.

This is our home. Humans don’t belong in the swamp.

The moon continued to rise, the familiar agony beginning in his chest. A full moon, a dangerous moon, Billy fought the demons churning within his body, feeling the pain of metamorphosis.

He curled inward, hunching his shoulders, the curse of his nature making his spine pull until his tendons and muscles tore from their human positions to transform into something wicked.

A howl erupted from his throat, followed by another, and then another. Grabbing handfuls of dirt, he tried to fight the awful change, but, as the sun set, the moon took control of his life, and the unnatural force tore through his unwilling body.

Reason fled; his heart raced. Falling on his hands and knees, Billy let loose a keening cry as his face elongated, his body changing into a canine, fangs filling his mouth. He raced in a circle in a demented dance, knowing his fellow pack members did the same thing.

Slowing, he regulated his labored breathing, forcing the icy calmness he needed to keep some semblance of reason. He peered through the dense brush. Lights from the search party bobbed in the distance. The odor, the stench of humanity, filled the clearing. The enemy had arrived.

BLURB:

SOMETIMES YOU GET WHAT YOU NEED . . .

Allison Stuart has always been the odd-woman-out of her family. She wears her jeans a little too tight, colors her hair a little too blonde, and instead of going into medicine and law like her sisters, she runs a diner. She’s also the only single sibling left. And while she won’t change her style, and her meatloaf is to die for, thank you very much, she wouldn’t mind her share of wedded bliss. So she makes an early New Year’s resolution: No more meaningless flings.

Drop-dead sexy Luke Hamilton is everything Allison has sworn off. His only serious relationship has been with his five-star restaurant, Le Cygne Noir, in Chicago. When he’s threatened by a lawsuit, Luke decides to hide out in Pineville, Michigan, until the statute of limitations runs out. The small town is filled with Christmas charm, but he can’t imagine living there. Heating things up with the hottie who owns the local diner would make his exile bearable—if he can convince her to give up her ridiculous resolution . . .

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
She laid a hand on his arm and squeezed. “Both my sisters are married to nice, dependable men, and I have two nieces. That’s what I want. No matter how much my hormones want to take you up to my bed and have their way with you, that’s not going to get me to my dream.”
“Nice. Dependable.” He shoved his hands deeper in his pockets. “It doesn’t sound like you want a husband. It sounds like you want a pet dog.”
She took a step back and ran her hands down her dress, smoothing out the creases. “There’s nothing wrong with dependable.”
“It’s boring.”
“Reliable.”
Raising his hand, he picked up a lock of her hair and twisted it around his finger. “That’s just a synonym for dependable, not an argument.”
“This isn’t something you can argue with me about. It’s my decision.” She took a step away before turning back. “I’ll show you to your room. And I really am sorry I threw myself at you like that, gave you the wrong message. It won’t happen again, hot shot,” she said with a wink, her good humor restored.
Luke picked up his bags and trudged after her up the stairs. She bounced back as quickly as her curls did, and a tiny kernel of resentment blossomed in Luke’s gut. He didn’t want her to be heartbroken, but a token display of dejection wouldn’t go amiss. Luke was man enough to admit that the fact that he was never going to have Allison Stuart caused an ache behind his breastbone.
And just for a moment, he thought about what it would take to be the kind of man Allison wanted.
Hi Caridad. Thanks for being my guest today. Tell us about you as a person.
I am a Type AAA personality which means I am always going, going, going.  If I am not at my day job or writing, I am helping my daughter with her surf and skate shop, mentoring other writers at Liberty States Fiction Writers, or just hanging out on the beach (Okay, I do have to stop sometime! LOL).  I’d love to be a full-time writer and maybe have a bed and breakfast where I could whip up amazing meals and help other writers improve their craft.
Caridad Pineiro
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
That is a tough one!  I think it would have to be Queen Elizabeth.  I got hooked watching The Crown and the Queen is someone who has lived through some fascinating times and has such a unique and seemingly archaic role in a very modern world.  I would love to know how her vision has changed from when she first ascended to the throne to now and how she’s dealt with being a woman in such a high position of power.
What’s the story behind your latest book?
ONE SUMMER NIGHT, first book in the At the Shore series, is a Romeo and Juliet meets a marriage of convenience tale.  Yes, it sounds complicated and it is because the hero, Owen Pierce, is trying to do everything he can to make the heroine, Maggie Sinclair, love him, but to do so he has to defy his father who is intent on holding a decades old grudge against the heroine’s father.  As you can imagine, lies build upon lies shakily until it all comes crashing down and Owen has to prove to Maggie that his love for her was true.  I loved writing the complex emotions in both of the characters as well as the supporting cast of Maggie’s best friends and Owen’s younger brother (the hero of #2 in the series).
What is your writing process?
I write a lot on the train during my commute to and from NYC for my day job.  On the weekends I put in a solid stretch of 3 or so hours.  During winters I do that indoors while watching the TV, but my favorite time is in the spring and summer when I can go out on my little balcony and write with the sound of the nearby ocean.
Tell us about your main character.
I had just finished writing a dark paranormal novel when this character popped into my head and just wouldn’t leave me alone.  She was spunky, determined and fun and I knew she needed special story that would inspire people not to give up on their dreams.  That heroine was Maggie and when she brought along her friends, I just knew I had to write her story.
If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role and why.
I would love to have someone like Nina Dobrev or Victoria Justice.  I think they both look the way I imagined Maggie Sinclair. Cool and elegant.  Beautiful.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on #3 in the At the Shore series.  #2 – WHAT HAPPENS IN SUMMER – will be out in late spring 2018 and #3 will be out in late summer 2018.  I am hoping to write more stories set in Sea Kiss with some of the men and women you meet in #3.  I also will be rel-releasing some of my earlier contemporary romances and working on new stories in The Calling is Reborn Vampire Novel Series.
What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?
Social media is about being social.  I think people get turned off by having a constant cycle of “buy me buy me” all the time.  You need to engage people, make them laugh, share yourself and not just the book.  Another thing to remember is, You’re the brand.  The book is just a product.  Your brand is what’s most important.
What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?
That’s a tough one.  I’d have to say Lois Winston’s latest release – Scrapbook of Murder.  I love Lois’s dry humor and the way she mixes up crafts in her cozy mysteries.
Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?
I wish that I could say that I did, but I don’t.  But I try try try to improve what talents I have, whether it’s writing, cooking or doing crafts.
You are given the choice of one super power. What super power would you have and why?
I think the power of speed since I could rush from place-to-place to help people and do more things in less time.
List 5 things on your bucket list:
  • Sip wine in Tuscany.
  • Stand on the Great Wall of China
  • Orbit the Earth in the Space Station
  • Sing Do-Re-Mi while skipping through the streets of Salzburg
  • Visit where my family lived in Cuba
