Doorway to Scorn
by Dimitrius Jones
Many in the world of Austyria dream of becoming heroes, gaining classes like Mage, Knight, and Beastmaster. With the power granted to them by the powerful Alrelics, they can level up and accomplish extraordinary feats.
The citizens of Hollo village long for a hero to save them from the malevolent Gate, which disfigures all who see or try to enter it. Lex dreams of becoming a Soldier and leaving his cursed village with his friends, Bibi and Ariel, but his class designation ceremony devolves into absolute disaster. Within days, he’s forced to embark on a journey that will change his destiny forever.
To save his friends, Lex must uncover the mysteries of this mysterious doorway, while keeping his scornful heart in check before it consumes him utterly.
Oedorius notices the commotion and stalks towards us, the other guards following closely behind him. Soon, he reaches us, and Ariel’s soft whimpers have become loud, wailing sobs. Oedorius calmly stops and stares down at her, and I’m certain I see a glint of amusement in his eyes.
“You are Ariel Branderford?” he asks.
“You’re not taking her.”
I blink, and Lex is between Ariel and Oedorius, his arms spread out to bar his approach. I position myself in front of Ariel, still crouched on the floor, and Oedorius sighs before sheathing his sword. He considers us for a moment before glancing back at one of the guards.
“Kent. Be quick.”
“Those who would defy the hands of time, be hidden from its eternal grasp. Hold!”
My body shivers as I leap to my feet. No! Not that spell! I race towards its source, hoping I can at least knock the spellcaster off balance so it won’t have a chance to be fully cast. As I near Oedorius, time begins to slow, and it feels like I’m trying to run underwater. I frantically try to shake myself in order to move faster, but it’s too late.
I become frozen in mid-air, everything around me moving as it should. Lex stands beside me still as stone, his hand stretched out as if to block the spell from hitting him. Maybe he meant to say something, but neither of us can say anything now.
Oedorius bends down and shakes Ariel’s shoulder. “Get up, girl. You’ve caused more than enough trouble. You will come with us, or we will kill you now.”
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Dimitrius Jones was born and raised in West Texas, much to his eternal annoyance. Despite this, he first picked up the pen at the tender age of six. His first masterpiece was a page-turner was about dolphins that used eye lasers to kill a hurricane. From there, his life took a few twists and turns, but he always found his way back to his trusty notepad.
His next few projects include a self-help book for those who suffer from low self-esteem as well as a full-length fantasy/romance novel to be released sometime in the future. Dimitrius has always, perhaps unsurprisingly, been inspired by the mystery, tragedy, and wonder of fairy tales.
His goal in life is to constantly inspire, amuse, and shed light into the corners of life we didn’t know were right in front of us.
The book will be $0.99 during the tour.
Dimitrius Jones will be awarding a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.
Tell us about you as a person.
I’m a person who is shaped by resiliency. As a black queer individual, I’ve always had a unique perspective on society and our culture. It’s shaped me into the person and writer I am today.
I use my experiences as a canvas for my stories and art. My mission is to create artforms that represent those of us who are often forced onto the outskirts of society.
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
It would undoubtedly be Beyonce. We would clear out a conference room somewhere, and I would pick her brain on topics such as work ethic, creating a sustainable business model, and her secrets to success.
Then, I’d ask her the nosy, personal questions I’ve always been dying to get answers to. So, it wouldn’t be long before the conversation devolved into “girl talk.”
What’s the story behind your latest book?
I was raised on video games, particularly JRPGs. The gameplay never intrigued me as much as the storyline and characters. I kept playing mostly to find out what happened next and to see if my favorite character was going to get their big moment to shine.
I also noticed not enough of these characters looked like me or the people I grew up with, so I sought to change that. I had just finished yet another playthrough of Grandia when the idea for Doorway to Scorn struck me. Thus, the world of Austyria was born, though I’m sure my keyboard didn’t appreciate my manic typing from that afternoon until 3 in the morning.
What is your writing process?
Typically, I start by outlining the world the story takes place in. Jazz music helps a lot during this phase. One odd thing about me is that I can’t focus on writing if my apartment isn’t completely spotless. I’m not sure why, but it distracts me (even though I’m mostly staring at my screen).
Once I’m ready to dive in and start the first chapter, my genres range from Romantic-era classical music to whatever I feel best fits the atmosphere of the book. If you want to keep me in a good mood, French composer Claude Debussy is usually the way to go.
Tell us about your main character: (If fiction)
Lex is a boy who dreams of becoming a Soldier and leaving his cursed village. His peers regard him as highly intelligent, and he loves to read books by famed scholar and alchemist Roseweian. Though normally well-meaning, he lets his emotions get the better of him. He also tends to disregard the feelings of others.
He was left on the doorstep of the Branderfords as an infant and raised in their home as one of their own. The Branderfords have two children, Cello and Ariel. Eventually, they also adopt Bibi when she is brought to Hollo by her dying mother. Lex considers the three girls his siblings, and he is fiercely protective of him.
What I love most about his character is that he constantly questions things. He rarely accepts anything at face value, which I believe is a crucial survival instinct.
If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role and why.
I believe Jaden Smith would be an amazing pick for Lex. He has experience with fantasy/sci-fi in the form of After Earth. He’s also starred in Neo Yokio, an anime set in a fictional city with magicians. He has a very youthful appearance and personality, so I think he could pull off an angsty-yet-highly-intelligent teenage boy.
As for someone like Bibi, I would be inclined to pick China McClain. She’s starred in the Descendants movies on Disney Channel, and I feel this would be right up her alley. She’s also relatively young with a youthful appearance and has experience playing teenage characters.
What are you working on next?
I’m happy to say I have a lot of ideas for new stories, including follow-ups for Doorway to Scorn. I’m finishing up a teen fantasy romance and currently developing an urban fantasy with a paranormal detective who’s an HR nightmare.
I want to write stories that feature queer people of color, to be sure. Given the events that have taken place this year, representation is more important than ever.
What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?
Don’t be afraid of reviews. They’re your best friend, especially when you’re first starting out. Don’t let a bad review convince you that writing isn’t for you. Start where you are and make improvements. You can do it.
What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd holds a special place in my heart, and it always will. I can read that book over and over again.
When it comes to fantasy books, I grew up on Mercedes Lackey, and I often return to her Heralds of Valdemar series. I have a soft spot for Vanyel Ashkevron. He was the first gay fantasy character I ever read about, and it was groundbreaking to have a character I could relate to in that setting.
Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?
I have the uncanny ability to befriend anyone’s pet. I’ve been told I have a soothing presence by many. Plus I love animals anyway, so I’m sure they pick up on that.
I also sing and dance whenever I’m in the mood. I’d like to record an album or EP one day, even if it’s just the one and only sells 100 copies.
You are given the choice of one super power. What super power would you have and why?
I’ve always wanted to fly ever since I was little. There’s so much freedom in being able to jump into the air and take off to anywhere you want. Plus, imagine the views! It’s not as useful as super strength or, you know, being the god of thunder, but I can’t imagine having any other ability.
Just don’t ever give me telekinesis. I don’t trust myself to not be mischievous.
List 5 things on your bucket list:
- I’m going back to NYC to drink mimosas and wander the streets in search of the alternate-reality, romanticized version of NYC.
- Become fluent in Spanish. I can understand quite a bit when someone’s speaking to me, so I might as well just hunker down and learn the language.
- Learn a martial art. I’d love to compete if possible – it’s the shonen anime watcher in me – but more so it would be great exercise and discipline training.
- Learn how to sew. I’ve always wanted to learn how to make certain garments, whether it’s for cosplay, drag, or everyday wear.
- Lastly, I want to visit a real haunted house. My friends think I’m crazy, but I’ll end up convincing them to go with me anyway.
