I feel the buzz of my alarm before I hear it. The vibration starts slow and soft, gradually growing both stronger and louder. It doesn’t matter. I will silence it altogether before anyone else can hear it. It is dark as I snooze the alarm. I try to avoid looking at the screen so my eyes will stay adjusted to the limited light in our sleep area. I know it reads 5:36 a.m. My body is tired, but my mind is already churning. I doubt it ever really stopped in the four hours since I curled up to sleep, but that’s the pace on tour. There are eight other people sleeping either below, next to, or behind me. I always try to claim the top, front, driver’s-side bunk in the bus. There are usually six beds on each the left and right hand sides, stacked three tall in the middle of the bus, separated by a narrow hallway. Twelve people makes for a crowded ride, so the ideal range is seven 15 Hours Until Show Time 8to ten, leaving a couple of bunks open for overnight bags. At least in the United States. I used to sleep on the top right, in the back row of bunks. Only a thin wall separated my head from the TV mounted in the corner of the lounge, and all night long, I could hear whatever was happening back there. Steady, thumping bass, violent video games, porn. It didn’t take long to decide the front bunks were more my style. Some people prefer the bottom, but I don’t mind climbing the other beds like a ladder to reach my nook up high. Once I’m up there, I am alone.

Rachel Pfennig Hales has always loved show business. From theater as a child, to a brief stint in television production, she found her niche in live event production. Rachel was able to start her career touring around the world with the Black Eyed Peas, and then with Lynyrd Skynyrd. Now, she is the Client and Community Development Manager at Rock Lititz, helping with various touring rehearsals and building up the live event culture on campus. Rachel also does a lot of writing, within the live event industry and beyond. She has BAs from DePauw University, an MA in English Studies from National University, and an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Goucher College.

When the Devil appeared to Riga, she laughed.
Not bravely. Not sardonically. Hysterically.
His skin had a parboiled look. He was naked, and looked like something out of an old horror film, his horns curving backward like a mountain goat’s. She learned later that laughter is a normal reaction to the Devil. But at the time, she just figured things had gone very wrong.
Exactly what had gone wrong… Well, there were several options available.
Three days earlier, she’d received a letter from an elderly magician requesting her appearance in Doyle.
Riga had ignored the letter.
She was no longer a metaphysical detective and couldn’t leave her children, only seventeen months old and already bursting with magic.
The next night, the magician, Mrs. Steinberg, called.
Riga had said no again. Bafflingly, a year ago her familiar had turned into a human. And you don’t leave an ex-gargoyle running amuck in human form without supervision.
Last night, Mrs. Steinberg called again. Riga had again said… no. Thanks. Really. Still retired from detecting. And her husband was having some tricky dealings with the government. She couldn’t possibly leave.

Tamara, our leader, must have been impressed because her tone softened with each day as she watched us work.
“I hate to mess with success,” she said one morning a few anks later, “but I’ve been told to break up this little group.”
She wore her dark blonde hair in a single long braid that hung all the way down her back and I’d noticed she often played with it when she talked, particularly when she delivered news she knew we wouldn’t like. She played with her braid now.
“Why?” Rooslin was upset. “You don’t like that we’re doing well?”
“I like it very much. But my next job is to get each of you to the right place.” She pointed to the woman who had streamlined our work. “You. You’re never going to make much of a fighter. What were you thinking when you joined?”
The woman hung her head. “I wanted to help defend Ilari.”
“And so you will,” Tamara said. “But not with us. I’m sending you to engineering. They can use a brain like yours.”
The woman gave a happy little shrug. I suspected she’d be welcomed by the engineers and far happier with them.
Tamara turned to the man with the bad back. “And what were you thinking? You don’t belong with us.” His shoulders sagged. “Never mind. Everyone has their reasons for joining. Lucky for you, your friend over there says you cook better than he does and we need cooks. Report to the kitchen. You can help save Ilari by keeping our soldiers fed.”
He stood up tall. “Yes, madam.”
She turned to the other two men in our group. “You’ve lifted more than your share of rocks. It’s time to let newer people take over. You’re off to training. Go learn to be good Svadlu. I’ll see you around.”
They made little gestures with their hands and arms that were popular signs of victory, and she laughed. Then she turned to Rooslin and me.
“Well. I didn’t expect to find two of you.”
“Two of what?” Rooslin asked.
“Two people I want to take back to headquarters with me. You two don’t need to go to training. Under the circumstances, you’ve been fast-tracked. You’re Svadlu already. Get your horses. Let’s go.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Sherrie Cronin is the author of a collection of six speculative fiction novels known as 46. Ascending and is now in the process of publishing a historical fantasy series called The War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters. A quick look at the synopses of her books makes it obvious she is fascinated by people achieving the astonishing by developing abilities they barely knew they had.
She’s made a lot of stops along the way to writing these novels. She’s lived in seven cities, visited forty-six countries, and worked as a waitress, technical writer, and geophysicist. Now she answers a hot-line. Along the way, she’s lost several cats but acquired a husband who still loves her and three kids who’ve grown up just fine, both despite how eccentric she is.
All her life she has wanted to either tell these kinds of stories or be Chief Science Officer on the Starship Enterprise. She now lives and writes in the mountains of Western North Carolina, where she admits to occasionally checking her phone for a message from Captain Picard, just in case.

Hunter nodded, then tossed pieces of twine onto the table. “Rooms for the night. I’d say it’ll be better than sleeping on the ground, but they often rent these things by the hour.”
“Let’s just be glad they don’t have black lights here,” Grant said.
I nodded at the twine. “What’s with the rope? Does the bondage come complimentary? Come for the rooms, stay for the rope play?”
“You telling me you want me to tie you up, shadow-girl?” Hunter picked one up and reached across the table to catch my wrist. He tied it on me, the feeling of his strong fingers against me enough to make me wonder if the rooms might give us a second, spider-free, shot at sex. “These are enchanted to get us into the rooms. Think of it like a keycard, hell-style. We have four rooms, and the sigil on the bead matches the one on the door of the room.”
I twisted the string on my wrist. “There isn’t a bead on mine.”
“That’s because you’re approved for all the rooms.”
The statement sounded nice until math caught up with me and fucked me like it always did. “That means I’m not getting my own room, doesn’t it?”
Hunter didn’t even try to look sorry. “It isn’t nearly safe enough for you to sleep alone, shadow-girl. You’ll bunk down with someone else.”
“And let me guess—you’re offering?”

Today was a day of tragedy, although most did not know it. It was a dark, cloudless night. The mist hovered in the silence of the night, stagnant with the suffering of the land that lay below it. “Oh.” Ara sighed as she sat alone in a muddled study. Her face flushed as her eyes scanned over a piece of parchment at the base of a broad window. Her irises, like embers, were so round and passionate, glistening almost red as she eagerly inspected the letter her beloved had left her. But in that moment, as she realized what had happened, her eyes began to quiver, becoming trapped within garnet walls of fear. Marilyn decided to become a writer when she read Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Her first short story was The Gold Lace Dress. She wrote her first book, East West Island, in grade school. It featured all of the children in her third-grade class and her teacher read it to the students in installments during class every day. She wrote and directed her first play at age 13, starring her brother and sisters and some of the neighborhood kids. The show raised money for the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.
Marilyn is a public relations consultant in Atlanta, a PAN member of Romance Writers of America (RWA) and Georgia Romance Writers (GRW) and winner of the GRW 2009 Chapter Service Award. She is also a member of Atlanta Writers Club. Marilyn was past chair of the Roswell Reads steering committee and serves on the Atlanta Authors committee. She writes in a variety of genres from humorous women’s fiction, historical romantic thrillers, romantic suspense and paranormal/fantasy. She loves to travel and often sets books in places she’s visited.

The problem with the dream is we expect that fairy tale life to be handed to us. As we get older, we figure out that’s b.s.; even if we do get the fairy tale life, we’ve got to work our Cinderella-asses off for it.

Dakota’s breath caught at the undercurrent that zapped between them. He cast her a sardonic grin. It was as if he knew she didn’t want to scene with him, and his gaze dared her to withdraw from participating.
Like she would give him the satisfaction of calling her a coward or a welcher. He didn’t know her.
But he was about to—intimately. Shivers washed over her in a tidal wave. For better or worse, she would know his touch. Unease churned with need, like her body couldn’t settle on one emotion or sensation.
Straightening her shoulders, she nodded, bowing her head out of respect. Better to begin as she meant to go on and avoid any punishments. She set the bin down in the corner, where it would be retrieved tomorrow. With her heart drumming a fast beat, she left the pit and headed toward the scene area indicated on the marker.
At least Ryker’s spot wasn’t a public one. Not that she minded public scenes or steered away from them, but in this, with a Dom she didn’t know, she preferred privacy. That way, if she embarrassed herself with him, no one else would be around to witness the spectacle.
Dakota rode the elevator down one floor and strode to private room number ten. The hallway was decorated like the floor upstairs, with dark gray hardwood floors and inky black walls. The golden lighting was muted, adding a seductive quality to the design. All the private rooms were comparable to one another in aesthetics, with the same color scheme. What differed in each one was the furniture contained inside, which varied from room to room. But each private room had its own bathroom, and a chest of drawers stocked with everything from condoms to lube to butt plugs and floggers.
Room number ten sported a black leather couch, a chair, and a black padded table that resembled what could be found in a doctor’s office. The backrest could be raised and lowered at will. There were metal stirrups that were currently retracted into the wood base below, and a number of silver loops to which to affix all manner of cuffs, bondage rope, and Velcro restraints.
Dakota quivered when she spied the Velcro restraints already in position on the table. Would he bind her to it?
And what type of scene would Ryker expect?
With a few deep, calming breaths, she knelt in the center of the room and awaited his arrival, trying like mad not to focus on her disquiet at scening with a new Dom, and instead on what she hoped would be a night full of pleasure.
