Discussion of a Decent Dream

by E. Curtis

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Dark Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

In the fall of 1789, on the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales, a dense, persistent fog enshrouds the village of Ingleton. Shadowed spirits hide in the mist and bedevil the townsfolk, heralding a tragedy that has befallen one of their own.

Edmond continues to search for Alexandra, his fiancée, who disappeared the same night that the mist set upon their town. Presumed dead by all others, he visits Alexandra’s empty grave, desperate for any hint of what has become of her. Weary from the sleepless nights on his quest, no longer able to stay awake, Edmond falls into a dream before her headstone and there obtains clues from Alexandra as to her whereabouts.

Haunted all the while by a malevolent spirit, Edmond follows the trail that Alexandra left for him and enters the underworld, only to learn that he has been there before, and in fact, quite often. But more, he discovers how he is to blame for Alexandra’s disappearance.

A dark literary novel rich in imagery, Discussion of a Decent Dream unearths the consequences of a child’s decision to surrender his heart in exchange for unholy power and transcendent knowledge.

Discussion of a Decent Dream is a Finalist in Britain’s Wishing Self Book Awards in the Adult category.

EXCERPT

We ignored the portent that crept into the countryside the day she disappeared. But in the weeks that followed, with no answers as to what had befallen her, with no assurance that she still lived, we came to understand, and most saw the worst in the blanket of mist that stopped time and shut us out from the rest of the world.

I had just turned twenty-one the summer of 1789 when Alexandra went missing. And after all our fruitless searching, in need of some direction, I snuck, under the cover of night, into the yard where her parents had laid their sorrow to rest. Falling to my knees before the stone of her empty grave I spoke with reverence, not for the hallowed ground, but for the call that brought me, as though somehow she could hear me.

Our dork of destiny rides again!

Edger is falling for Mary, his bodyguard, kick-ass spy, and cover wife. But she’s so hopelessly out of his league, it’s clear someone’s going to get hurt. Less clear? That someone may be the Prime Minister of Australia.

When Mary confesses her desire to kill the world leader whose assassination Edger’s supposed to prevent, Edger’s superpowers pick the worst time to stop working. Without a fully functional psychic superhero, their team of spies can no longer order him to probe Mary’s mind for ill intent. The stage is set for a confrontation that threatens to strip a defenseless Edger of his loyal protector just when he needs her most.

Return to the Collective Unconscious, this time with Listerine-chugging stoners, Hollyweirdos, commie-alien-kung fu robots, one space gorilla-unicorn, and an exceedingly lovesick Vladimir Putin.

Mind your fingers and toes on page 270. Those skydiving mind-control monkeys have been known to bite!

Read an Excerpt:

I find Mary in the walk-in closet after her workout. Three of her peering back at me with wide eyes. Four, if we count the sweaty, pheromone-blasting, flesh-and-blood Mary in the middle.

Her hands glide down her hips as she turns sideways. The mirror reflections copy her like evil clones. Her head tilts, and her unreadable gaze scans from three angles every inch of her toned physique. She eyes the contours of her breasts in an understated Calvin Klein sports bra; she examines her sculpted midriff and the concavity of her bellybutton. The Gigantic Rock glinting in the mirrors, her thumbs dip below the waistline of her yoga pants, cruise outward along the elastic, and tug once. She bites the corner of her glossy pink lip and scrutinizes every possible curve from the waist down—and with legs like hers, it’s a long way down—before flitting up to find mine, spanning those sexual leagues in an instant, and landing her gaze like a side-kick to the gut. I can barely breathe.

Air squeezes into my lungs like I’m sucking it through a straw-sized snorkel. I’m slouching. Better stand up straight. Unlock my knees. I’ve got to get it together. If she and I are going to live under the same roof, I can’t be falling over every time she has the audacity to exist. Otherwise, I’ll need some kind of house scooter to motor around on my butt all day. Beep-beep, coming through, time to brush my teeth—well, well, don’t you look hot again—okay, faint on you later.

Evil Embers (Vale Investigation, book 2)

by Cristelle Comby

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Urban Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

After narrowly preventing the destruction of Cold City, PI Bellamy Vale needs a rest. Or rather, he needs a plain and simple vanilla case—no monsters or otherworldly creatures involved!

When foreign businessman Eli Smith shows up at his doorstep with a thick wallet and a request to find his missing sister, Vale doesn’t think twice before agreeing.

If he’d known body-hopping demons and smoke monsters came attached to this job, however, he might have.

EXCERPT

The door slammed shut as something grabbed at me. And by “grabbed”, I mean “lifted me off the ground and rammed me into the nearest wall”.

The structure bent under the impact while a nightmare that would have fit in an old-school John Carpenter movie screamed at me. With my gas mask on, I never heard it coming.

Dazed, I glanced up and faced sharp, yellow-tainted teeth. They formed a circular pit of canines, ready to swallow my head whole. I pulled a knife from my boot and slashed the creep at the center of its mass. The fiend’s scream rose an octave as the cold steel struck home.

The creature dumped me back on the floor before dissipating into nothingness.

The attack sucked the air out of my lungs, and I spent the next few minutes coughing through the mask. I felt like kicking myself. I spent my first week here carving wards around the entire six-block area before going in for the first time. I should have known better than to cut one on this house’s front door and move on. I forgot the back door. That mistake left that damned poltergeist way too much room to attack.

The monster du jour was a ghost, an escapee from the realm of death—the Underworld, Hell, or whatever else you call the place people go to once they’re done with life. From what I knew, not everyone turns Casper in their afterlife. However, those who do become near-mindless creatures stuck in their own plane of existence. When they make it to our side of the border, they turn into full ectoplasmic savages.

The dead guy I stepped over near the open back doorway was proof enough of that. What was once an engineer working for the city now had his chest cavity cut down to the bone and his head severed from his body. Blood splatters all but drowned out the muted yellow of his shredded biohazard suit. Judging from the angle of what remained of his corpse, he was trying to flee the house when the poltergeist got him.

Dammit,” I muttered as I tightened the straps on my gas mask. Whoever this engineer was, I was pretty sure he didn’t come in here alone, which meant I may have to explain what a six-foot PI in a surplus army jacket, a gas mask right out of the First World War and second-to-thirdhand leather gloves was doing in an area strictly reserved for city workers and engineers.

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Anya Summers will be awarding a $15 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Meghan Mallory has a plan for her life and it does not involve falling in love. She doesn’t have the time nor the inclination. She’s too busy trying to save the world. But when a freak snowstorm puts her in the path of a man she has secretly been fascinated with for years, she is forced to reconsider her stance on dating. Spencer is rude and obnoxious with his bad boy swagger but then he rescues her when she gets stranded on the side of the road, like a knight in tarnished armor, and sweeps her away to his house to ride out the blizzard.

Spencer Collins likes his life just fine, thank you very much. As the owner of the lifestyle club Cuffs & Spurs in Jackson Hole, he has a bevy of available subs who are his to command – not that any of them have held his interest in longer than he can remember. When his best friend’s sister-in-law gets herself into trouble, Spencer heads out to rescue the little brat who is in need of a firm hand. But he never expects to be forced to confront the incendiary heat that has always existed between them.

As the storm rages around them, they surrender to a passion hotter than the sun. Now that he has felt her surrender, Spencer attempts to lure Meghan into his world. But will they let go of their pasts or will they allow secrets to destroy them?

Read an Excerpt

“I’m to tell you that your sister is pissed you worried her this way.”

Meghan squelched the ever-present guilt when it came to her sister and sighed. “She always worries. Why aren’t we going to Carter’s? It’s a hell of a lot closer than your place in Jackson.”

She studied his profile, the angular, firm jaw covered with a neatly trimmed black beard.

His gaze was trained on the road as he navigated. The way his big hands—the fingers long and bluntly tipped—kept a firm hold on the wheel made driving in these horrendous conditions appear effortless. “We aren’t going into town. My house is roughly ten minutes from here.” His gruff voice, the deep, rather exasperated, bass slithered along her spine like a caress.

“But I don’t want to stay with you,” she protested. She’d rather be stranded on Hoth or on the U.S.S. Enterprise without power. Plus, she’d been looking forward to a night or two at Casa Jones with lots of yummy food and the chance to hang with her nephew. She was indoctrinating him into her love of pop culture and science with measured success. Then there was also the tiny little fact that the thought of being cooped up with Spencer, alone, made her entire body simmer, and not in anger but anticipation.

“Why? Chicken?” he dared and glanced her way.

Meghan’s heart thudded. Her mouth went dry. And deep down she knew the answer was a resounding yes, not that she would ever admit it. With a deadpan glare, she snorted. “Nope. In your dreams, big guy.”

“Relax. I don’t bite. I have guest rooms you can pick from and we will hardly see each other.”

“Sure. Thanks. I just don’t want to be an inconvenience.” Not just to him but to anyone. Not ever again.

He rolled his shoulders in a manly shrug that was so distinctly bored alpha male, her entire body whimpered with the desire to feel all that strength against her.

And then he opened his mouth. “There are always ways in which you can thank me.”

The innuendo flash-fried her brain, bombarding her with carnal images she wanted to deny. But her body told a far different story. Stupid hormones. Her blood ignited. She pressed her thighs together to squelch the distinct throbbing and felt her nipples bead into hard points. Thank god the parka cloaked and hid her desire. She didn’t want to feel this way about him—or anyone, for that matter.

She cast him a withering stare. “Ew. Thanks, but no. You can let me out right here if this rescue comes with those kinds of strings.”

“Just saying, if you really feel that bad, I can find plenty of chores to keep you occupied.”

“Chores?” She glanced his way. His lips were compressed into a thin line but those midnight eyes of his, the ones she saw in her darkest fantasies, danced with merriment. He was teasing her, the big lug.

“Sure. I could use a maid or a cook.”

She couldn’t help it. Really, the man drove her to it. And perhaps her brain had not yet completely defrosted from her sojourn on the side of the road and then the tawdry images her brain had conjured at his innuendo… Her fist curled of its own accord. She punched him in the arm.

“You’re such a jerk. You had me thinking—”

Before she could retract her left fist, he snatched her wrist. “Careful, brat. Had you thinking what?”

And his dark gaze glittered, bored through her defenses before shifting back to the road.

What did he see? Did he intuit that she was fascinated by him? That the thought of him putting his big hands on her again liquefied her insides? Just the simple contact of his hand gripping her wrist, his thumb pressed against her wildly beating pulse, made her panties wet.

VBT – THE TURSIOPS SYNDROME

The Tursiops Syndrome

by John C. Waite

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

How do you get a nuke into the heart of the city? Maybe a dolphin can help. From Author John Waite, the tale of a police detective who matches wits with a mad scientist and terrorists intent on destroying America. When detective Hickory Logan joins Park Ranger Kevin Whitehead investigating the mysterious death of a dolphin she finds herself sucked into a far deeper whirlpool. Can she and Kevin stop the tide of terror that threatens to kill thousands or will they be fodder for a nuclear fireball?

A newspaper review described Tursiops thus: “The writing is, well, wonderful. Waite has a gift for dialogue and story-telling, and his plot is adventurous and perfectly paced.”

EXCERPT

 Red Logan hunkered down next to the Humvee’s left front wheel. He folded his lanky frame in several places to assure that the vehicle shielded him from rifle fire emanating from the house a hundred feet away.

A furious fusillade had greeted A-Company, first battalion, 407th Special Forces when their vehicles pulled to a halt in front of what was a rather strange building for northern Afghanistan. In the early morning darkness it looked for all the world like a California ranch-style home.

But there was no BMW parked in the driveway.

The firefight lasted less than fifteen minutes. There was only an occasional round pinging off the slate-riddled soil and infrequent bursts of automatic fire keeping the soldiers from charging the structure. Red wondered why the squads weren’t using some of the heavier weapons. He knew the unit armament included shoulder-fired missiles and a Carl Gustav 84-mm recoilless rifle but so far, the big stuff had been silent.

The tip had placed Azam al-Zawahiri, Al-Qaeda’s chief organizer for nine-eleven, in the house.

Numerous such tips over the past two years had come to nothing. Most of them originated in minds overly-motivated to garner the twenty million American dollars offered for the capture of several of the world’s most wanted terrorists.

At least one Osama bin Laden look-alike had been found dead. And it took weeks before authorities identified the body.  The man had been killed and left in a house to which an Afghan citizen directed U.S. forces. Not only did he not get the reward he sought, but his countrymen also jailed him for mutilating the corpse by cutting off its hands and feet.

Army intelligence, a title Red thought oxymoronic, had considered tonight’s tip more credible than most since it had come in anonymously. The tipster hadn’t mentioned the reward. So the Special Forces unit had headed out in the predawn darkness for a two-hour drive north from Kabul into the mountainous terrain.

“Red?”

The voice belonged to the figure squeezed into the wheel well behind him.

He could barely see Jessie’s sinewy shape, strangely gawky where the video camera and its now-dark lights rested on her right thigh.

“Yeah, what?” he whispered.

“Should I get some video?” Jessie asked, cocking her left hand back over her shoulder.

“Hell no. We’re reporters, not soldiers. CNN’s not paying us to get shot. Just keep your ass down. There’s nothing to shoot.”

Before he could finish his sentence, an amplified Afghan voice rang out from the vicinity of the lead Humvee, imploring the occupants of the house to surrender. The answer was a three-shot rifle volley, the rounds pinging off the hard-pack and whining away into the darkness.

“Now,” Jessie said, pushing past Red and swinging the camera onto her shoulder, leaning on the Hummer’s hood.

“No.” Red yelled, trying to pull her to the ground. But it was too late. The light on Jessie’s camera flared brilliantly then died in a crash of glass and the harsh double bark of a Kalashnikov. The rounds zinged away into the darkness, but Red heard in the report the crunch of bone.

“Jessie.” he screamed.

Tell us about you as a person, something not everyone knows about you.

Although I was born in New Orleans, I spent most of the first five years of my life in Anchorage, Alaska and I still hate snow. My father was an aviation meteorologist, and he had been stationed in the frigid state during the second Great War. I still have letters that he sent his then-wife, my mother, which are stringently redacted, many sentences blacked out.

I almost remember one fishing trip when, not much more than a toddler, I fell into the creek. My dad built a fire on the railroad tracks which we had walked to the stream and dried my clothes.

I have a few glimmers of memories from those days, the most distinctive of which was when something broke into a backyard cage and slew my pet rabbit. I remember crushing sadness.

From Anchorage, the weather bureau transferred my father to Miami. We spent about a year there, before being transferred back to New Orleans, where I passed my formative years. It was in Miami that I met my paternal grandfather for the first and only time. He was a Presbyterian missionary and had spent some years in China, where my father was born. I still possess letters between my father and his father. Because of his birthplace, my father had to prove his United States citizenship before he could work for the US Weather Bureau.

If you could hang out with one famous person, who would it be?

It would have to be Neil DeGrasse Tyson. He picks up where Carl Sagan left off. Not only is he a real scientist as Sagan was, but he is also a first-rate communicator. He has a feel for putting scientific principles into words. And if there is one thing the world needs more of right now it is real scientists willing and able to transfer their knowledge via the common language. Life is short. Science is forever.

What’s the story behind your latest book?

The story behind The Tursiops Syndrome stems in part from my affection for dolphins and people who appreciate them. And I always like stories of international intrigue. Dr. James Crabtree, the angry scientist (notice I didn’t say mad) in Tursiops loves dolphins and seeks notoriety. Despite his affection for Tursiops, he uses them in a get rich-and-famous plan.

What is your writing process?

My process is to just sit there and stare at the page hoping something will appear. Somehow that happens, and I think I am creating it. If I’m not and it just appears on its own, then I am the luckiest writer in the world.

Tell us about your main character.

A bit about Hickory Logan. She worked hard to win her stripes in the Pensacola PD, particularly in the wake of a previous bad relationship. However, she did that and still aims high. So she is a bit wary about her relationship to Kevin, her male co-star in The Tursiops Syndrome. Hickory is a tough, smart woman, with a bit of a soft spot for dolphins, evidenced in her attempt to rescue a porpoise stranded on a sandbar off Pensacola Beach.

If your book were to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role, and why?

I’ve always liked Halle Berry. She’s been in several action movies and carries herself beautifully, while still packing a good punch. She could certainly carry off Hickory Logan’s persona, and would definitely play well in the love scenes too.

What are you working on next?

My biggest project is a fictionalized account of the life and death of my best friend. He died in Vietnam early in that disastrous conflict. Had he lived he could have well accomplished his stated purpose in life, to be President of the United States. In the meantime, I am doing several things, some of which appear in the online journal Page and Spine.

What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their books?

I am still learning how to promote. There is a lot more to it that one imagines. And you have to spend a little money. There is a whole industry out there based on new writers’ needs. It’s a very different profession from what it was just recently.

What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?

I’m just finishing Jeffrey Eugenides “Middlesex.” To say the least, it’s a hell of a book. The hurricane of research he put into that volume is mind-blowing.

You are given the choice of one superpower. What superpower would you have and why?

Time travel, because I want to know how the universe ends.
List 5 things on your bucket list:

  • Get really good on the violin.
  • Be a bestselling author.
  • Sell my book to a good movie producer.
  • Complete the book about my best friend.
  • Fly airplanes again.

Any final Thoughts?

I write because I want people to enjoy the story. I hope they do.

The Amazing Unfolding World of Machine Civilization Series

by Clayton Barnett

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Science Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

NOTE: Echoes of Family Lost and The Fourth Law are only $0.99

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURBS:
A history beginning in our near future, these stories are set in a world where the US dollar has been displaced as the world’s reserve currency, prompting its economic and political collapse, with a few areas able to hold onto civilization.
At the same time, across the Pacific, under a resurgent economy brought about by the implementation of new technology and deregulation, three Japanese companies produce breakthroughs in both artificial intelligence and robotics. These newly made people exhibit an odd interest in the goings-on of the former United States.
To-date, my chronicling of this interest of theirs has led to stories that populate five novels, which I would like to share with everyone now!
The Fourth Law – In the near future, 23-year-old apprentice nurse Lily Barrett lives in a shattered time. Following its economic collapse, the US has devolved into a group of a few barely functional smaller states and vast swathes of barbarian badlands. His sister has been missing for years, and her father, after earning the opprobrium of most of the world for running a state terror organization, presumed dead.
Two things keep her going: her live-in job at a small, Catholic orphanage in the city of Waxahachie, Republic of Texas, and Ai, her odd but dear friend, whom she met online; a young woman who only shows herself to Lily as a rendered CG image.
Troubled by her past, haunted by her name, and facing an uncertain future, Lily seems only a quiet, simple life. But, that past and her present conspire against her.
Cover_TheFourthLaw
Echoes of Family Lost – Alive! After four years believing her older sister lost and presumed dead in the horrible Breakup of the United States, Lily Barrett gets word from her dear friend, Ai – and Ai’s family of Machine Civilization – that Callie Barrett is very likely alive… but over 900 miles away in Knoxville.
Using the resources of her and Ai’s family, Lily puts together a search party to go find Callie: old, broken, and burnt Orloff – an expert in surviving in the Badlands, Ai’s little sister, Fausta – her machine mind controlling a Combat Android to protect her friend, all together in a cart pulled by their sturdy pony, Clyde.
It’s almost a thousand miles to go, with something very odd trying to limit their ability to communicate over distance and even to cross bridges. A chance meeting along the way in Huntsville, former Alabama, wrecks their plans, and puts all of their lives in danger.
Cover_EchoesOfFamilyLost
Cursed Hearts – Even with San Diego occupied by the Mexican Army, Katarina Sosabowski pursues her MBA at UCSD, and is happy to welcome and put up her visiting step-cousin from Japan, Christopher Dennou, for a night so he can complete his enrollment the following day.
But a minor earthquake brings a major surprise: Chris’s younger sister, Maya, murders their mother and escapes Neuroi Institute, the research facility that created them.
While Chris and ‘Cat’ grow closer to one another, Maya inexorably crosses an ocean and half a continent to take back her brother, killing anyone who gets in her way.
Cover_cursed hearts
Friend and Ally – Model 5 is a prototype designed to fit seemlessly into human society. A meeting in Tokyo derails Nichole’s planned training as she is dispatched to Portland, former Oregon; the last working deep water port on the West Coast of the imploding US.
There, under her cover as a Graduate Engineering Student, she is to do her utmost to nurture the people and politics of the City-State into a Friend and Ally of the Japanese Empire. But from the first day in her new home, all of Nichole’s plans go awry.
Beset by those who want this small lamp of Western Civilization snuffed out, Nichole must find within herself the courage and ability to protect her new friends, at whatever consequence to herself.
Foes and Rivals – After residing nearly a year in Portland, Nichole’s life seems to finally settle down: with her classes, friends, and lover. But troubling rumors about secret deals between the City’s master and the savage horsemen to the east reach her ears.
With her own skills augmented by her friends and allies, she sets plans into motion she hopes will thwart those in opposition to her dream of a peaceful future.
Once again denied a quiet, normal life, Nichole is faced to make hard, dangerous choices that will jeopardize her, her friends, and the survival of the City itself.
The Fourth Wall:
~oooOOOOoooo~
hooo…..hoowwlll!….”
~oooooOOOOOOooooOOOOOoooooo~
hah…haaawooooollLL!”
Lily!”
LILY! You’re not a wolf! Wake up!”
She groggily sat up from her bed. Huh?
It’s three in the morning… you need to help your kids!” Ai shouted at her from her phone.
The kids!
She flung the cover aside and pushed her glasses onto her face. Now she could hear the siren. What was it this time? Tornado, airstrike, barbarians… the last was almost a year ago when they lost Texarkana. Wait. She shook her head to try to wake up. This time, she’d an unimpeachable information source.
Ai. Status.” She said into the darkness.
A fission weapon was detonated outside San Francisco about ten minutes ago; the weather pattern indicates fallout will travel north of you, into parts of former Kansas and Oklahoma. But, winds do change…”
Right.” She started pulling her clothes on. “Wake up the Fitzhughs; I’ll be there in a minute.”
She walked from her bedroom through her main room, glancing at the monitors. She suddenly bit hard on her lower lip. On the monitors, Ai stood at attention in a Texas Field Forces uniform. For some unknown reason, she forgot to render her pants. Striped green and white panties? Lily worried about her friend sometimes.
One time engineer, some time pharmacy technician, full time husband and father, Clayton Barnett stumbled into writing a traditional novel November 2014 during National Novel Writing Month. Liking the results, he edited what would become “The Fourth Law” and set about teaching himself self-publishing. In the following four years he has produced four more novels as well as a children’s early reader, all in what is now called Machine Civilization.
Clayton Barnett lives in central Ohio with his wife, two daughters, and two dogs.
Thanks for being my guest here today. Tell us about you.
Born in Texas, raised in the Mountain West, currently in central Ohio. By degree and temperament a design engineer but currently a pharmacy tech… and writer! Wife of a quarter-century and two teen daughters. And two dogs.
Converted to Christianity when 32 and was rewarded with my wife getting cancer and me finding out I’m a mule. On a whim took up writing books a bit over four years ago; five novels and a children’s book to-date with at least two more novels already in mind.
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
Besides the obvious, Jesus, I’d pick Lucius Cornelius Sulla, the Roman Republic’s first true Dictator. A complex, difficult man. I’d like his thoughts about the current death-throes of the United States.
What’s the story behind your latest book?
My latest, The Saga of Nichole 5, comes in two parts: “Friend and Ally” and “Foes and Rivals.” Having explored friendships, families, and lovers over my earlier books, I wanted to take all that experience and try adding a little politics and war. I am, honestly, very pleased with how it turned out!
What is your writing process?
I listen to background music… but often in a foreign language so I do not get distracted. Otherwise, when in ‘serious writer mode,’ I come home from DayJob, change clothes, mix or pour a drink, and sit down for at least an hour. Writing is a job and must be treated as such: professionally.
Tell us about your main characters:
I’ll try to keep this short while still touching on all five novels…
“The Fourth Law” – Lily Barrett, early 20’s, nurse apprentice. Haunted by the loss of her sister and the genocidal acts of her father, she meets another young woman, Ai, online, and comes to love her as her best friend.
“Echoes of Family Lost” – Lily again, with her friend Fausta (Ai’s kid sister) acting as a bodyguard. Also, the Hartmann family (Leslie, Callie, little Gary), part of a team trying to resuscitate a dead world.
“Cursed Hearts” – step-cousins Chris and Cat, students at UC San Diego, who fall in love. He’s a bit more than human and early on we find out that his sister, Maya, is on her way from their ‘home’ in Japan… to kill them.
“The Saga of Nichole 5 (parts 1&2)” – Nichole herself is an android made to fit seamlessly into human society. Although made in Osaka she “looks like a poster-child for Irish Tourism” and is dispatched by her Empress to try to help a tiny remnant of modern civilization, Portland, former Oregon, survive.
If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role and why.
Oh… this is a tough one! I don’t know many modern movies so some of these might seem out of left field!
Lily Barrett and Ai: Anna May Wong and Kirsten Dunst (in cosplay).
Fausta: Rosa Salazar (as Alita… and I bet Fausta could take her)
Chris and Cat and Maya: Kazuya Kamenashi and Anna Tsuchiya and Rin Asuka.
Nichole5: Reba McEntire (young)… and Nichole is frequently on horseback
What are you working on next?
I’m about 20k words into “Worlds Without End,” another Machine Civilization story. So far it’s a bit of a love story and science project, but I’m thinking about how to toss a few buckets of blood into the plot!
What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?
Why, take a book tour with Goddess Fish Promotions, of course!
And it also helps to physically get in front of people: I’ve given talks about creative writing and self-publishing at local schools and conventions. I have been to a few ‘local author fairs’… looking someone in the eye, shaking their hand, talking about my stories… you would be surprised at the response!
What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?
[glances left at shelves with about a thousand books on them… errr…]
In the sense of “trapped on a desert island” kind of favorite? Then how about Barzun’s “From Dawn to Decadence.”
Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?
I have in this trainwreck of a culture, by the grace of God, kept my marriage intact for over twenty-five years while raising – to-date – two wonderful GenZyklon daughters.
You are given the choice of one super power. What super power would you have and why?
The answer I wrote, based upon an old pulp SF story, was removed at the request of my wife, mentioned just above, who quipped, “do you want to be ‘disappeared’?”
List 5 things on your bucket list:
In no particular order:
  • Visit Comiket and Akihabara
  • Visit the Holy Land
  • See my daughters marry good men
  • Live long enough to see the development of Marie Rose sexbots
  • Die before the events in my books come to pass.
Any final thoughts?
Thank you, everyone, for reading and following the tour! Please read and review my books!
EXCERPT
I handle the bodies.
That’s what I say when people ask me what I do for a living. I find that gets one of two responses. They drift away to the other side of the room and give me a sideways glance the rest of the night or they let out a nervous laugh and move the conversation in another, less macabre direction. I could always say I work at a funeral home, but where’s the fun in that?
Every once in a while when I was in the Corps, someone would see me at Starbucks that modern mecca Wal-Mart in my utility uniform. Sometimes they’d catch me in my dress blues after a military ball just trying to grab something before heading back to the base. They would walk up to me and say, “Thank you for your service.” I’d mumble something like “No, thank you for your support” or some other pithy rejoinder, and they would wander away with a nice satisfied look on their faces. Sometimes what I wanted to say was, “I took care of the bodies. The bodies with the legs blown off or the hands shredded. The bodies full of ball bearings and nails and whatever some kid could find to build his IED. I loaded the bodies up and dragged them back to the base, then went back out on another patrol and prayed to a God that seemed to be only half-listening that today wasn’t the day that someone would have to take care of my body.”
But I don’t think that would have given them the same warm and fuzzy feeling.
S.A. Tell us about you.
Well I w
as born in a small southern town. My parents separated when I was five. My mother was disabled when I was seven. We had to move in with my grandparents. It was there I discovered a love for reading and writing. We were very poor. We didn’t have cable or more than one tv. My grandmother would let me read her True Story magazines to keep me occupied. Soon I became a voracious reader. Eventually I began writing my own stories. I had complained to my mother about how some of the books I read ended and she encouraged me to tell my own stories. That way I could end them anyway i wanted to.
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
Wow ,that’s a great question. I think if i had a chance to hangout with Walter Mosely that would be a great way to spend a day on this good ol’ space rock. He’s a black crime writer and he is a fascinating person. I would love to pick his brain. Not just about writing but about his life and the inspirations for his great characters.
What’s the story behind your latest book?
M
Y DARKEST PRAYER was born out of my desire to tell a story that incorporated the traditional noir tropes but tell the story through the prism of a man of color in the South. I felt like it was a story no one else was telling . I had a hard time finding a way into the book though. In my experience a murder in small town is rarely a whodunit. It’a a can we prove it. So I had trouble visualizing a situation where a private investigator would solve a crime in a small town. One day i was talking with my friend Todd Robinson , a great writer and the creator of ThugLit, and he told me i should just make my MC a trouble shooter. My day job is at a funeral home. To paraphrase Todd there are hundreds of ready made stories walking through your door every day. It was like a light bulb went off in my head. After that came to me pretty quickly.
What is your writing process?
F
irst I have to be alone. I sometimes talk to myself when i write and it’s just less awkward if I’m by myself. I usually have some type of music playing. Different songs for different scenes. If i am writing a fight scene then I’m listening to something aggressive. If I’m writing an emotionally wrenching scene I will listen to something more nuanced like jazz or trip hop. I usually will get up and walk around to work through plot points that are giving me trouble. I used to have a writing hat but my dog (RIP Pugsley) ate it. That didn’t kill him but I never replaced the hat.
Tell us about your main character:
The main c
haracter of MY DARKEST PRAYER is Nathan Waymaker. Nathan is a biracial man living in a small southern town. A former Marine and ex-sheriff’s deputy Nathan left the force after the police declined to charge the man who killed his parents in a road rage incident. Blackballed and unable to find work Nathan takes a job working for his cousin Walt at Walt’s funeral home. Nathan becomes a bit of a guy Friday at the funeral home. He also moonlights as a troubleshooter. An unlicensed investigator for people who can’t or won’t go to the police. I envisioned Nathan as another iteration of the the traditional noir hero with just a few differences. He is a damaged character but he retains h is sense of humor. He is a man of color living in a state that was once the home of the confederacy. He is a hero but a tarnished one. He is capable of great violence but also great love and caring. The main thing i wanted to accomplish with Nathan was to make him likeable enough a reader wouldn’t mind spending 220 pages with him. I hope i succeeded.
If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role and why.
W
hen I first starting writing MY DARKEST PRAYER I had the idea that Nathan looked a lot like Dwayne The Rock Johnson. But upon reflection I think he has more in common with Jason Momoa. They share a self deprecating sense of humor but also embody a strong aura of determination and fierceness.
What are you working on next?
Right now I am in the middle of edits for a rural heist novel. I have also been working on a revenge thriller that would tackle some delicate social issues in the rural community. I am also working on several short stories for various projects. And I am scheduled to read at several NOIR AT THE BAR events. These are events where crime writers read short stories in a an appropriately noir setting, a bar.
What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?
Go
to where the people are. Go to conventions. Live reading. Join a writing group. Make people remember your name and the title of your work. Network with other writers. Having friends in the writing community will help you promote your work and will make you a better writer.
What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?
THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME by Daniel Ray Pollock. It is a haunting novel.
Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?
I am a fair chess player. but I still can’t beat my uncle who taught me how to play.
You are given the choice of one super power. What super power would you have and why?
Invincibility so I could stop wearing my seatbelt. I really hate that thing.
List 5 things on your bucket list:
  • Go to Paris.
  • Swim with dolphins.
  • Compete in a sanctioned boxing match.
  • Make a perfect pancake and flip it in the pan.
  • Meet Barrack Obama.
Any final thoughts?
I just hope people will buy MY DARKEST PRAYER and enjoy it. At the end of the day that’s all any writer really wants. To make people happy. And lots and lots of money LOL. Kidding. (not really)
