BLURB:

With the rift closed for the season and no more monsters to fight, Daelin Long gets bored as librarian in the podunk town of Settler, Oregon. A job interview and her brother’s arrival present a tempting opportunity to escape, until her brother and her best friend, a ghost, disappear.

While Daelin searches for them, more mysteries pile up: dead people coming back to life, portraits of the town founders replaced with strange white trees, and people on the other side of the rift returning. It’s impossible. The portal that allows monsters from other universes to come to Earth is sealed until next summer.

The Rifters, a secret group protecting our world, believe the troubles are nothing more than the tantrums of an offended ghost. Daelin disagrees. If she’s right, the evil hell-bent on destroying Earth has new technology making the rift more deadly.

Before the monster summons the next apocalypse, Daelin must find it and destroy it.

Book 3 in the Rifter series.

Book Excerpt

A modified pair of 1920’s aviator goggles hung around Daelin Long’s neck. She pulled them up over her eyes—the same inky shade as her hair. The lenses distorted the world in tints of violet except for the space in the middle of the two obsidian pillars rising as high as the twisted juniper between them. The air amid the columns sizzled in cobalt lines and tangled together into a blue ball. The sky lightened and the energy dissipated.

“So the rift is good and shut. Is that what the disappearance of the blue energy ball means?” she asked.

“Mmhmm. The sphere of energy was there all summer. Now it’s not.” Sabina brushed her fine white curls behind a pair of bold ears. “Now you have proof the rift closes on the fall equinox. You’re the sort in need of evidence.”

“Yeah, I’m a pain that way. Here’s the thing though, Sabina, this year the portal opened three days early. You heard what Earl said.” Earl Blacke had more secrets than Daelin’s sister, more secrets than a town with a mysterious portal leading to other universes, more secrets than the ghost watching over the library. “How do you know the rift won’t open again when it’s not supposed to?”

“I’ve been a Rifter longer than you’ve blinked. You needn’t worry so much. You forget your first lesson as quickly as you demonstrate your knowledge of it.” Sabina held out an arm.

“Trust.” Daelin took hold of her boss’s hand and helped Sabina onto her feet. “We can blame my mother for my inability to stick with my lessons. She taught me to never trust.” If Daelin hadn’t questioned her mother constantly, her brother, sister, and herself wouldn’t have made it out of childhood. “I suppose I’ll never progress farther than the rank of Initiate in the Rifters then?” She didn’t mind being the lackey of the elite group of townspeople who battled otherworldly monsters, then the group wouldn’t miss her when it came time for her to leave.

They see death. Can they share a life?

Ruth Scott can read the energy of every person she meets. Then she meets Deacon Walker. She can see his ice-blue eyes, his black hair, and his gorgeous face. But this beautiful stranger has no aura.

Deacon is just as unsettled by Ruth—and, having spent more than two hundred years ushering souls to Purgatory, Deacon is seldom shocked by anything. As he helps Ruth to understand her true nature, she awakens desires that he decided long ago a Reaper can’t afford.

A demon invasion forces Deacon to confront the darkness in his own past even as he fights to save the human souls he’s charged to protect. When he’s taken captive, his first concern is for Ruth. But Ruth just might be able to save herself—and the Reaper she can’t live without—if she can learn to wield her newfound powers.

Excerpt

What does a guy have to do around here to get some service? Deacon Walker marveled as he glared at the undulating queue of grotesque reapers in front of him.

For all that’s holy, move the hell along already.

It had been a long week, and it wasn’t over yet. He needed to make at least one more pass through the hospital circuit before he could call it a day. He could already feel the tug of a freshly departed soul. Again. People were dropping like flies lately.

He massaged his brow, trying to soothe his exhausted patience as the line inched forward at a snail’s pace.

He was worn thin. Over the past few weeks, three demon soul poachers had popped up in his fair city of Meridian like poisonous mushrooms after a hard rain.

While it wasn’t unheard of for one to slip out from Hell every now and then, three was a nightmare.

When it got topside, a demon’s M.O. was to steal a human body, poach a few souls from the dead and dying, and then make its merry way back to Hell, taking its host’s soul along for the ride. The only way to save the souls a poacher was carrying was to behead the host with a scythe. Not a pretty thing to do, but the poor suckers were too far gone by then to survive anyway. No human could withstand the pressures of being ridden by a demon. And it was worth it to save a handful of souls, not to mention inconveniencing the demon.

Deacon refused to lose any souls from his territory. At all. So far the score was Deacon, 3. Demons, 0.

Book Tour – Dwarves in Space

dwarvesinspacebanner

About the Book
Title: Dwarves in Space
Author: Sabrina Zbasnik
Genre: Science-Fiction / Fantasy

Thousands of years after the jewelry’s destroyed, the sword reforged, the dragon ridden, and the indecipherable prophecy translated into a recipe for sugared biscuits, the dwarves turned to that final frontier: space. And along came the elves, orcs, gnomes, trolls, ogres, and those vermin-like upstarts, humans.

Dwarves in Space is Tolkien merged with Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy in a horrific transporter accident.

The Elation-Cru is not the flashiest ship, nor the newest, or even has all of its bolts attached; but she can fly. Well, sort of wade through space, and that’s when all the parts are working. She supports a sugar addicted dwarven pilot, an elven engineer, an orcish doctor, a silent djinn, and the lone human trying to hold the entire thing together with duct tape. Variel, the captain, has been hiding from a secret for the past five years and time’s finally run out.

When she goes against her common sense and fights to save her onboard assassin/renter from a job gone sour, she finds herself before an ex-colleague that knew her in her previous life as the Knight of the realm. The entire ship is sent on a mad dash across the universe — from a decaying space station, home to the wackiest species the galaxy has to offer, down to the Orc homeworld, which wouldn’t be so bad if Variel hadn’t spent most of her previous life fighting in the war against them. Chances of survival are nil and slipping fast.

Author Bio

S. E. Zbasnik has a degree in genetics, which means there may or may not be a horde of monkeoctopi doing her bidding to take over the world. Bringing that scientific approach to the fantasy world is her game, trying to put some common sense into magic and magic into common sense.

She currently lives with her husband and beloved dog, who dress up like Sherlock Holmes and solve mysteries in their spare time. She spends nearly of all her time in Nebraska but that’s because it is impossible to leave without finding the lamppost. She lives in a house that has at least four walls and there are some other souls wandering forlornly calling to their lost lives within.

She loves and hates writing as she both loves and hates herself.

She’s a huge video game nerd especially for Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Bioshock as well as Doctor Who and makes fan art in her down time.

She’s a neutral good assassin, so it’s best to not get on her bad side.

Book Excerpt

“Eclipse 5, this is the Elation-Cru looking for a docking number. Please respond,” Variel rolled her neck back, trying to blink away the last of her sleep. If this weren’t the heart of “the safest ports in the galaxy” she’d probably be nervous about the quiet comms.

“Eclipse 5?” She continued before turning back to Orn, who lifted his massive shoulders and slipped another boot overtop his first. He’d pull out his PALM and start playing Spacecolony if the boss wasn’t staring right at him. “I say, is anyone there?”

“We have coin?” Orn threw out.

The static popped and a voice, higher pitched than was typical for most organics, screeched across the flight deck, “This is Eclipse 5, oh bloody hell! Who let those little brats in here to dick with the controls?” some shuffling drifted across the space, a few pops answered back, and the voice returned much less like a rodent freebasing helium, “We have you on sensors, Elation-Cru.”

“Sensors,” Orn snorted, “look out a bleedin’ window and we’ll wave back at ya.”

“Docking port 75-C is open. You’ll be in the Happy Jellyfish lot,” reported the man who was probably wiping sticky chocolate off his control panels.

“Joy of joys, we get to be a spineless blob of tentacles.”

“Orn,” Variel warned softly.

“Right, fine, uh,” the dwarf flipped the switch back, “This is Elation-Cru, Ecstatic Jellyfish, got it.”

“That’s Happy Jellyfish,” the weary voice stressed, “I see you’re registered with the dwarven embassy. A proper customs officer shall be out in an hour.”

“Right, Happy Jellyfish over and out,” Orn mocked, flicking off the channel and punching in a few numbers. Docking was fully automated after one too many rich snots got wasted on Lavabombs while skittering about the galaxy in Leap-pods that somehow always wound up in the main director’s lobby, the lady decals ripped to her nude waist. Pilots needn’t bother with parking, but Orn liked to appear busy.

Variel sighed, this part of the galaxy made her itch. The surest way to snap was waking every day with forced joy and a shit eating grin. She laid a hand on the dwarf’s shoulder as she leaned down to him, “Wake the others, I’m sure the twins have some unholy business they’ll be getting to.”

“What about her?” Orn asked, his eyes flickering to a smashed bulkhead that someone refused to repair on principle.

“Are you two…again? Fine, I’ll talk to her. Gods know there’s got to be something broken on this ship that’ll cost all our money to repair.”

Orn smiled, his overlarge eyes twinkling as he broke the comfortable silence of the ship by powering up the automated wake-up call. A charming cackle of a rooster bounded about the ship as bouts of twinkling music followed. The lilting, cheerful voice — certain to have driven entire systems of people to utter madness — chimed in, “Wake up sleepy heads! There’s a big day ahead of you among the stars!”

The fact that everyone despised the thing with enough furor to power the ship across twelve light years encouraged Orn all the more to use it every chance he got. As Variel turned to leave, most likely to put on something that wasn’t wearing to the point of being see through, the dwarf cheerfully called out, “Captain off the bridge.”

She flipped him off before the doors could close.

EXCERPT

September 20, 2013

Greg’s mind didn’t follow his body into the coffee house. His mind was still on the fact that with a few strokes of a pen, he had undone everything that he worked towards. The exhilaration of that definitive step was quickly replaced by a growing sense of unease. It wasn’t his style to pull the trigger, figuratively or literally, without having a game plan. Then again, he didn’t need a game plan, he needed a life plan. One step at a time. He chastised himself as he joined the line of caffeine-craving citizens.

The newspapers near the door caught his attention. All of the headlines contained some variation of the same – Local Sports Legend Found Dead at 27.

Ha, Legend at 27? Greg thought. I’m 29, and no one’s calling me a legend. Survived a bomb in Afghanistan…haunted by the nightmares…soon to be an Ellison family disappointment when everyone learns what I did, and a guy who played basketball is considered a legend…at 27? He looked around the coffee house. Half of the people in line were double that age. At best – maybe – they were a legend in their own minds. Greg’s self-loathing got ahead of his caffeine fix. He distracted himself with one of the newspapers.

MIKEL THOMAS DEAD AT 27

Greg studied the series of pictures of the same man, as a teen in a high school basketball uniform, in a college uniform, and in a professional one. The line for coffee at 8:30 in the morning was nearly out the door, so it gave Greg time to flip through the story.

Mikel Thomas, 27, was found in his West Los Angeles home Thursday night. His wife, Nisha, found Thomas bleeding from an apparent, self-inflicted gunshot wound when she returned home from a taping of her talk show. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Greg caught up with the line’s progress and continued to read.

Thomas, a professional basketball player, had a troubled career in Philadelphia, Miami, and Sacramento. He attended Pasadena High School where an injury forced him to give up a promising football career. Thomas began playing basketball as a junior and became a top college recruit. He attended college in Los Angeles before being drafted to Philadelphia.

Shoulda played sports. Greg thought.

Thomas was involved in a shooting incident that left one dead after he was traded to Miami. His repeated altercations on and off the court led to a suspension. After a trade to Sacramento, Thomas missed part of the season for an undisclosed medical condition following a mental evaluation in a Pasadena hospital last Christmas. Thomas had a history of drug and alcohol incidents, but detectives declined to comment on that being a possible cause. The investigation continues.

Pretty standard celeb drama. Greg barely registered the comments from the player’s wife and a teammate about the shock of it all. He caught up with the coffee line and skimmed further.

Mary Thomas, Mikel’s mother, called into a sports radio show late Thursday. When asked if there was any indication that Thomas was in trouble, she responded. “He kept saying that his disappearance from that Bliss bar changed him forever. It was that crazy bar that killed him. I know it.”

Excerpt:

I grabbed the wobbly banister and climbed the stairs two at time, my pounding heart threatening to jump out of my rib cage. Bulky footsteps trailed me, thundering louder and louder. A small stampede trailed after me.

“Going somewhere, boy?” Uncle Peter yelled. “You’ll never get a chance to heal. Not…after…I…get…through…with…you.”

His heavy panting echoed in the cramped stairwell. He was getting closer and closer.

“Not in three days, you won’t,” Aunt Janet said. “I promise you that.”

Her voice was shrill, a sure sign I was in real trouble. She was right behind him.

Great, more pain. They could at least tell me what I’d done. I hadn’t done anything bad at the baseball game. I even hit a home run—something that usually made them happy.

My hand shaking, I whipped open the door. I charged toward the window. My speeding heart sent blood rushing between my ears. Freedom was only six feet away. Out of the corner of my eye, an elephant-size blur barreled right for me. I shrank, but Uncle Peter seized my arm, digging fat fingers into my flesh.

He threw me. The room swirled. Pain slammed into my back. I had crashed into a wall, knocking the wind out of me.

Sweet Aunt Janet stormed over to me and backed me against the wall. “This. Is. Your. Fault.”

With each word, she slapped me across the face and slammed my head like a ping-pong ball into the hardwood paneling. Metallic swirled around in my mouth. Blood.

She wheezed and stopped. “Since it’s your damn fourteenth birthday tomorrow, they’re hunting you, putting us all in danger.”

Aunt Janet ran her hand through her Sonic The Hedgehog-cut ™ blond hair and paced around the room. Her high heels clicked on the hardwood floor. “What will we do?”

“Keep him locked in the cellar,” Uncle Peter said. “If he’s beat down…”

She stopped and clapped her hands together. “You mean they can’t find him if he’s in pain?”

Uncle Peter stretched out his flabby arms and nodded. “Yup.”

I knew that look. My stomach dropped to my toes. Nausea gripped me. Damn, my right arm just healed.

Book Tour – Maisy and the Money Marauder

MBB_TourBanner_MaisyAndTheMoneyMarauder copy

MAISY AND THE MONEY MARAUDER

by Elizabeth Woodrum

BLURB:

Maisy is back! Lunch money has been stolen at West Valley Elementary, and everyone’s favorite fourth-grade detective in on the case. With a cherry lollipop in hand, her fedora, and her trusty notebook, Maisy steps into her black and white mystery world to search for clues. Join Maisy on her quest to unmask a thief in Maisy and the Money Marauder.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt
Shadows danced across Maisy’s face in the dim light. Dramatic music filled her bedroom, and she reached for the popcorn bowl without moving her eyes from her little TV screen. It was a tense moment in one of her favorite old mystery movies. The villain was about to be caught. Maisy knew that the detective would soon march out from a shadowy corner and catch the bad guy. He would be wearing a long trench coat and a fedora hat. He’d sound so impressive when he demanded that the villain, a sneaky looking robber named Vinny, turn himself in, that Vinny would have no choice but to give up. But, Maisy was still on edge while she watched the scene unfold.
She was curled up with her favorite pup, Reesie, snuggled under the blanket beside her. As soon as Maisy had turned off the lights and started the movie, the little dog had nudged the pillows with her nose to show that she wanted under the covers. Maisy had complied with her request and tossed the pillows to the floor, so that she could scurry under the fluffy, purple comforter. Now, Maisy reached over and patted the lump that was the tiny dog.
The movie wasn’t very scary. After all, it was old and in black and white. Movies like that were not scary at all compared to some movies made today. But, still, Maisy loved the stories and detectives in the old movies so much that she couldn’t help but be drawn into them every time she watched one. She felt a little better having her dog there with her.
Suddenly, the moment she had been anticipating was on the screen. The detective smoothly arrived on the scene and, after a little scuffle, took control. Vinny gave in and put his hands up to show he would go quietly. Maisy relaxed and munched the last bits of her popcorn. As she sighed in relief, a little nose popped out from under the purple covers. It was soon followed by the sweet face of a little black and brown terrier-mix. One of her ears was flopped over, and she stretched her mouth wide in a huge yawn. Apparently, Maisy had disturbed Reesie’s slumber. The pup crawled around and finally settled herself on Maisy’s lap. She plopped her head down with a sigh and fell back asleep. She didn’t even notice as Maisy shook her head and laughed.
EXCERPT
“His name is James Lacie. Once he was one of the top alchemists in Cassadia. He was highly sought after for his many time-saving inventions and numerous elixirs. At any given time his shop carried wart remover, air fresheners, love potions, and something closer to that which you seek.”
Miss Mia turned back to her mirror and dabbed at her rosy cheeks again, humming to herself. Milo reached to his belt and produced a small leather bag. Opening the pouch he emptied it into the palm of his left hand. A pair of opal earrings spilled forth. “Closer to that which I seek, you say?” he inquired.
“Yes, a chemical fruit that when eaten would unknowingly render the eater susceptible to suggestion. A great party favourite a few years back. The unsuspecting victim would eat the fruit and was then told to cluck like a chicken or act like a coconut. Its effects would sometimes last the duration of a good party.”
“Yes, the gag would be much funnier if the victim was unsuspecting,” mused Milo. “Tell me, where can I find this James Lacie’s shop?”
“He no longer has one,” replied Mia. “It had something to do with a potion mix up. The king’s cousin ended up falling in love with a sheep, as I recall. The royal family was not impressed, and you know how the Chronicle can be when it gets its hands on what it deems to be a front page story. Ruined the man’s career, or so I’m told. Anyway Mr. Lacie has been on the lam ever since.”
INTERVIEW
Tell our readers about you
I’m 39. I live In Ontario Canada, in a small town called Lively. I’ve written 6 novels over the years- You can check out my webpage at www.grantreed.ca for info on all of the books. Gary and I are twins. I am Married and have two teenagers living at home. *sigh*
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My wife’s foot on my butt. Somebody has to bring home the bacon…okay she works more than me, but I need time to be creative too!
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
Oh boy, the choices! Hmmm this is a tough one. Since I am re-watching all of the Game of Thrones episodes now, and because I also write Fantasy, I think a day with George R. R. Martin is in order! I imagine he’d have some great advice to give.
What’s the story behind your latest book?
Funny Fruit isn’t our latest book, but since it is book 1 of the Vellian Heroes, and it is the book we are promoting on this tour, I’ll tell you about that one. Funny Fruit is a YA fantasy book about two teenage kids – Garrett and Azilda who are trained by two ancient brother’s Yarl and Fonn, to become the next protector’s of the realm.
It’s a humorous telling of the adventures these characters (and several more) undertake in order to save the King (and the realm) from the clutches of the king’s First General Ascentyai Asimo. If I had to classify it, I’d say it is a whimsical fantasy that is appropriate for the whole family!
Tell us your writing process
When I am writing, I like to get up around 6am, put on that first cup of coffee and then head down to my computer. I usually check the news sites first, in an effort to ease into another day of sitting at the PC. After I have had my fill of news and hockey articles, I re-open my work from yesterday and re-read/edit that work. Then I start writing for that day…
Do you have any advice on what has and has not worked for you that you can share with other authors?
All I can say is get your hands into everything and try all different avenues available. I don’t want to say what I think works and what I think doesn’t, because what works for me may not work for you and vice versa. Try different things and log all of your results. Also, sometimes the best ways to promote your book do not cost a lot of money. Get reviewed!!!
When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
I knew from about the age of twelve that I wanted to tell stories for a living. I loved being taken away to a new magical place with deadly hazards around every corner.
Tell us about your main character:
Garrett is a twelve year old boy, who is being raised by his adoptive father Kirk Willigins in the small town of Fable. When the town is sacked and the villagers escorted to the Northern Mines to work as slaves, Garrett and his new pals must find a way to free his father. Together with the old Masters Fonn and Yarl and his new training partner Azilda, they set off to right the wrongs visited upon the villagers by the king’s First General.
What are you working on next?
I am putting ideas together for book 4 of the Vellian Mysteries books, and I am also tossing around some ideas for the sequel to Shadow of the Makarios.
Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?
I’m an exceptional trout fisherman!
Who are your favorite authors?
David A. Gemmell
George R. R. Martin
J. R. R Tolkien
Hicks /Weiss
What do you like to do with your free time?
I like to fish and hunt, play video games, and yell at my kids.
Thanks for being my guest here today 🙂
TIME TRAVELING HOOKERS
by S.E. Burr
BLURB:
Three modern day roommates and recent college grads take a time machine back to the Wild West. The time machine breaks, stranding them in the past where they are forced to join a brothel to survive.
With the help of future technology, they’re able to trick their customers into thinking they’re getting what they pay for, without actually having to do the deed.
But the scam involves getting much more up close and personal with smelly, 19th century hicks than germaphobe and prude, Anastasia, is comfortable with.
One customer seems sweeter, more attractive, and better groomed than the rest. Could she actually fall for a cowboy from the dirty, disgusting past?
EXCERPT
Etta hooted. “Art of lovemaking!” she said, slapping her leg. “Well that’s the funniest thing I ever heard. Ain’t no art going on here. Ain’t no love either. This is a business I’m keeping, and if you want a room in my brothel, you’ll damn site bring in the money to pay for it.”
Beth was angry. Angry. And when Beth was angry she’d say something she shouldn’t, or worse.
Anastasia put a restraining hand on Beth’s arm and Beth glared at her.
“We’ll make money,” said Anastasia. “We’ll make you plenty of money, but we’re tired and dirty. We’d like a bath and a bed so we can be ready for tonight.”
“Well, we’ll see, give you a trial, like,” said the woman. “Go on in. I won’t show you to your rooms. I don’t wear these dirty things into the house, and I’ve got a good sight more work to do here, but hopefully you can find your own way without waking the whole house. The girls are still asleep, and there are some gentleman callers hanging around, who I’m sure don’t want to be disturbed.”
They went into the whorehouse. It was nice, very nice. On their first trip into the town, Anastasia had taken it for a wealthy man’s house, a house big enough for a big family, with sumptuous room to spare.
But as she now knew, this was a different kind of house, and as she would soon learn, this was a different kind of family.
AUTHOR BIO
S.E. Burr wrote Time Traveling Hookers over the course of a weekend at a Tom Bird writing retreat in Santa Fe, NM. It is based on a dream she had a few weeks prior to the retreat, but she did no advanced planning of the plot. She was very surprised to discover that the story was a romance, as she did not often read romances, let alone write them. She quite enjoyed the experience and intends to write more romances in the future, but cautions that what she intends to write and what she actually writes can be two very different things.
She is the author of the young adult novel, Goblin Fruit, inspired by the poem “Goblin Market” by Christina Rossetti. The sequel, Goblin Girl, is coming soon. It was inspired by her desire to find out more of the story.
A nearly lifelong resident of rural New Mexico, S.E. Burr loves the desert, her family, and her cat.
