Sheriff Anderson nervously ran his hand over his face as he approached the porch steps. Even though the temperature was cool, sweat stained the armpits of his shirt. A large, overweight man in his early fifties, broken blood vessels covered the nose and cheeks of his puffy, florid face. His belly hung over the gun belt strapped around his hips. A black cowboy hat and black cowboy boots rounded out what the man evidently believed was the look of a Texas lawman. Luke had met him at different county events and had never been overly impressed.

The deputies took a position behind Anderson. With legs spread, a hand rested on the butt of their gun. Two were slightly overweight, dressed on the sloppy side like their boss. The third had a hard look to his face and a brawny build. His uniform looked a size too small. A long-sleeved shirt stretched tight across broad shoulders, and pants hugged muscular legs that needed to be an inch or so longer. The man’s eyes scanned the terrain before returning to stare at Luke. A sense of uneasiness flowed over him. Something about the deputy didn’t set right.

Upon retirement, she became involved in a research project that dealt with the death of a witness to the Kennedy assassination. The research led to her first book, JFK Assassination Eyewitness: Rush to Conspiracy, that details the results of her reconstruction of the 1966 motor vehicle accident that killed Lee Bowers, Jr.
The project jump-started a new career as an author and publisher, and she started a new business: Mystic Circle Books & Designs, LLC.

As an author, her fictional works are suspense/thrillers with a touch of paranormal and romance. Characters with unexpected skills, that extra edge for overcoming danger and adversity, have always intrigued her. Adding an infatuation with ancient myths and legends of Native American Indians, and Scottish and Irish folklore creates the backdrop for her characters.

As a publisher, her diverse background has proven to be an invaluable asset. Assisting other authors to publish their works utilizes the gamut of her experience. Graphics design has become one of her favorite endeavors.

Revision is a Process – How to Take the Frustration Out of Self-Editing

by Catherine E. McLean

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Self-Help, Self-Improvement, Non-Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB

A first draft holds the possibility of what will be a great story. Revision turns that rough diamond into a spectacular gem worth a reader’s money and time.

Writers are individuals but to be a producing writer means creating a system to revise and polish a work so the reader thoroughly enjoys the story. REVISION IS A PROCESS is a guidebook for writers and authors that shows how a simple 12-step process can be tailored to eliminate the most common and chronic maladies of writing genre fiction. This valuable guidebook contains secrets, tips, practical advice, how-to’s, and why-to’s for taking the frustration out of self-editing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
From Section 1, An Overview of Revision is a Process
. . . revision is a process .  A logical, straightforward process where you don’t try to find and fix everything at once. Instead, you break the monumental task into component parts and focus on only an item or two at a time.
Okay, so the reality is that creative people,  especially writers, hate logic and straightforwardness. And it’s a fact that logic and creativity have always been at war with each other. After all, creativity gives a writer a high like no other. It’s the fun part of writing and storytelling.
On the other hand, revising, rewriting, and self-editing are linear, logical, objective—and not fun.
But necessary.
Ever so necessary if one intends to be commercially successful in the writing business.
Here’s something I’ve learned about writing and self-editing—a writer should find a middle ground. That means having the logical part of one’s mind work with the subconscious imagination (the creative self).
It’s about adopting a different view of self-editing—calling it a process—and diligently organizing that process into small steps that can easily be done. This gives a writer confidence that they have polished their story and increased its marketability.
I strongly believe, and have seen, that revision-as-a-process enables a writer to use both their left (logical) and right (creative) brain to become even more creative.
That’s because the writer not only tailors a one-of-a-kind process but they also develop their own revision master cheat sheets. As a result, the creative subconscious (the imagination) becomes aware of the pitfalls and glitches that must be checked for, and subsequently, little by little, the creative self dishes up better first drafts with far fewer errors.
INTERVIEW 6 – cant live without
by Catherine E. McLean * catherinemclean00@gmail.com
(alternate email: Catherine@CatherineEmclean.com)
What are four things you can’t live without?
I have to narrow this down to four? Okay, how about— pets, a typewriter, a computer, and a camera.
Pets— When my daughter needed a cat for a small animal 4-H project. Her 4-H book said it was best to start with a kitten. Cats being cats, it would be hard to tell what specific kitten would end up tolerating becoming a 4-H project. So we decided to get three kittens. Long story short—we ended up with seven kittens.
Breeze, whose mother was feral, became our house cat and the 4-H cat. As the years went by, some of the cats died until we were down to the last three. They succumbed to kidney failure at ages 16, 16.5, and 17.
All during the cat years, we had a dog. He died two years before the sixteen year old cat. So, being without pets sounded like a great idea, and the husband and I vowed that after the last cat passed there would be no more pets. Well you guessed it. The house seemed empty. After much soul searching, I decided to get a dog for myself. I wanted a lap-sized, dust-mop type dog. After three months of searching pet shelters and answering ads, I bought a mini Schanuzer-Bichon Frize female puppy. All fluffy gray. Her name is Mojee. She thinks she’s the cutest thing with each wag of her stubby tail. Please note Mojee has no aggressiveness in her at all. None.
Back to the cat situation. Without cats, little wild varmints invaded the house. Chipmunks and birds thought they owned our deck. At a fall Tupperware party hosted by Amish neighbors, I mentioned I was looking for three barn kittens about six months old (that’s old enough for the mother cat to teach them to hunt and be self-reliant). Again, cats being cats, there was no telling how good a hunter a kitten would be. I was hoping for one out of the three.
Long story short—in the spring I took ownership of three, identical “black” cats (no white) from an Amish farm two roads away. I named the kittens Winkin, Blinkin, and Nodd. Unfortunately, weekenders with a cabin came up over the 4th of July and ran over Winkin, killing him. Now I have two cats. Although it’s hard to tell them apart, both answer to Kitty-Kitty. Nodd prefers being a house and lap cat (she sleeps on my lap when I’m watching TV). Blinkin was renamed Mr. B and is a terrific hunter. As unbelievable as it seems, both cats love Mojee, play hide and seek with her, and allow her to drag them by the ear or paw across my hardwood floors.
There is nothing like waking in the morning to the thunder of twelve paws racing across hardwood floors.
As to the typewriter. I learned to type on a manual and despite the evolution to a computer, I have not only the original, manual, Smith-Corona portable typewriter my mom bought me when I was 16 but also a portable electric. When forms need to be filled out, an envelope typed, or I want to go downstairs and work on ideas for a story, I use the typewriter. There are still some things a computer cannot do as easily as a typewriter.
Which brings me to my desktop computer. I live in front of it when drafting a story, when doing blog posts, when communicating with other writers by email. It’s the workhorse of my office, my storytelling, and for doing my online workshops and courses  – http://www.writerscheatsheets.com/upcoming-workshops.html .
Lastly, I cannot do without a good camera. My first camera gave me black-and-white pictures and eventually I bought a 35mm Cannon, which opened a new world of photography for me. Currently, I own a Canon Rebel digital camera. I went from having film processed to downloading photos to my desktop computer. However, because I used film, which was expensive to develop, I learned to frame my pictures before I took them and limited myself to only three shots of anything. As a result, the only touch-ups I might make to pictures is to crop them. Often, I get the photo with the first click. My photos have even won blue ribbons at the local fairs.
My favorite subject is nature—flowers and rocks. Currently, I’m sky watching and taking pictures of clouds. I periodically post snapshots at my website http://www.CatherineEmclean.com (click on the menu for Photos & More). Take a look—which is your favorite?
Pieter’s eyes opened, but it was an exercise in futility. There was nothing but darkness for him to see. He knew he was awake because of the lancing pain running down his back and across his chest; the cover on his head was stifling and smelled of sweat and blood. He was upright in some sort of chair but he was unable to move. The back of the chair was straight and hard, and he was bound to it with his arms pinned behind his back. He struggled to breathe. His chest was stretched as his shoulders pressed into the chair behind him. A cry of pain rose in his throat, but he clamped his mouth tight to hold it prisoner.
As he gasped for air and strained to ease the pain in his chest and back, a voice from beyond the pain alerted him to another presence.
“Suka is awake.”
“Good. I want this suka blyad to remember this.”
With no way of knowing or seeing its approach a hand struck his face, slamming the back of his head against the hard chair. He could stop the scream, but not the tears that rained from his eyes.
“Little boy want to play,” the voice taunted him.
Something hard crashed into his stomach, forcing the air from his lungs. He tried to breathe, but was unable. What do they want from me?
A second fist slammed into the side of his face, whipping his head to the right.
“Don’t kill him,” the first voice warned.
“I won’t. But he’ll wish I had.”
Interview With …
Thanks for being here Archer. Tell us about you as a person.
Well, besides archery and writing my passions include gardening and cooking, specifically baking. I love making bread. It is such a zen exercise. When I was younger I also flew. I still have my pilots license.
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
Oh my gosh, that’s a tough one. If I have to narrow it down to just one I suppose I would choose Socrates. He was the father of education and is often revered and the first teacher. More to the point he created what is still known as the Socratic method of learning. He taught his students to think for themselves and to seek the truth by questioning everything. He said we should always ask why?
What’s the story behind your latest book?
Evolved began as an idea. When man spreads out among the stars will the same rules of adaptation still apply. Science has shown how organisms change in response to their surroundings. They also change through the active selection process imposed by man. What will happen to man if we move to new worlds. It has also been speculated that the evolution of man has not been a a long slow progression but that there have been sudden changes in the human genome. From Australopithecus to Homo habilis to Homo Erectus to Neanderthal to Homo Sapiens. These leaps have occurred with regularity and appear to be triggered by changes in the Earth’s environment. Suppose man has reached the tipping point for another leap just the diaspora takes place. This is where we meet Pieter Varushkin and seven other Evolved children. This is where the story begins.
What is your writing process?
I find it easier to do most of my writing late at night. After everyone else has gone to bed. I like the quiet. It makes it easier to hear the voices in my head.
Tell us about your main character:
Pieter Varushkin is a fifteen-year-old living on a cold, rocky, heavy gravity world known as The Steppes. The planet was settled by Russian immigrants looking for a taste of freedom and a chance to live on an unspoiled world. The Steppes was sold to them by The Golden Door Corporation who hold a monopoly of colonization of new worlds. Pieter is an Evolved. He possesses the ability to manipulate gravity. But he is otherwise a normal teen aged boy until he is takes in the middle of the night on his fifteenth birthday.
If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role and why.
I’ve had my eye on a young actor named Aaron Fors. I think he wold make an excellent Pieter. He is tall, athletic and blessed with good looks in spades.
What are you working on next?
I’m currently working in the second book in this series. I’m anticipating at least three or four books covering a couple of generations.
What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?
Be prepared to work your ass off. There is no magic pill or short cut to becoming successful. It take hard work and determination to make a go of it.
What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?
I’m glad you asked. There is a book called Progeny by C.L, Fors. Yes same name as the actor. Yes they are related. It’s an amazing first offering by a very talented writer. Progeny takes place approximately three hundred years in our future. In am effort to reverse population growth and to cleanse the genome of defects, conception and procreation is strictly controlled by by a ruthless governing counsel. Now an attempt will be made to colonize Mars following many years of teraforming. A carefully selected group of volunteers is offered reproductive freedom as an incentive to leave their lives on Earth for a chance to settle a new world. It is well written and I must say it is an amazingly good read.
Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?
I was blessed with an insatiable curiosity and a desire to learn what’s next. Besides that I’m a pretty good cook.
You are given the choice of one super power. What super power would you have and why?
Hmm, I suppose the ability to read and control thoughts. Someone with this power could solve a lot of our current problems and could do so from behind the veil of secrecy.
List 5 things on your bucket list.
  1. Travel to the country of my ancestors, Ireland.
  2. Fly a P- 51 Mustang
  3. Settle on some acreage in the Pacific Northwest
  4. See my work made into a movie
  5. Have the chance to sit down face to face and talk with some of my favorite writers
Any final thoughts?
Yes. Always question. Ask why. Seek the truth in whatever form it takes, And as Robert Browning said, “Ah but man’s reach should exceed his grasp, Or what’s a heaven for?”
Excerpt
The term “tidal locking” will make many of us think of tides, but these are unrelated phenomenon. Our moon is tidally locked to the Earth. The same side is always facing us because the moon rotates on its axis in the same number of days it takes to orbit us. This might seem coincidental and unique, but most significant moons in our solar system are tidally locked to their planet; those nearest experience this first. Tidal locking is an eventual result caused by gravity. Early in a moon’s orbiting, it might not be tidally locked, but ours may have become locked in as few as a hundred days (its proximity and size having much to do with this).  A moon that is not tidally locked may have recently formed or been captured by the planet. Either way, the stabilization process hasn’t completed.
As world builders, we have some leeway to claim a satellite is locked or not. Most people are unfamiliar with the concept and we should only mention it if locking has occurred, as readers will assume the opposite without being told. Note that a close, large moon like ours will almost certainly be locked; during the brief period when ours was not, it and the Earth were molten and devoid of life.
Normally, only the satellite is locked to the planet, but they can become mutually tidally locked, as happened with Pluto and its moon, Charon. This means that each of them only sees one side of the other. If we stood on our moon, we’d see all sides of Earth as it rotates, but from Earth, we see only one side of the moon because they are not mutually tidally locked. If they were, the moon would stay in the exact same spot in the sky. About half the planet would see it, while the other half wouldn’t even know it existed unless traveling to the far side of the world. This would eliminate most tides (see next section) except those caused by the sun.
EXCERPT
Men and women dashed around the room, gleaming with sweat and smudged with black smears. The fires burned low. A large furnace at the center of the room had a thick chimney leading from it into the ceiling. Some people were moving piles of what looked like coal, while others tended a huge machine. It consisted of a number of large metal coils attached to gears. Some of the coils were wound tight while others were loose. The gears attached to the coils were meshed with gears that had magnets on them. Ropes, made of a material I couldn’t identify, were threaded through the center of the magnet gears.
We passed through engineering and climbed to the main deck. The wooden deck sprawled before us. The chimney from engineering came up through the floor and reached toward the cloth bubble above us.
Shy pointed to a cabin on the left. “That’s where you’ll bunk with the rest of the deckhands, Ember. I still have inventory to do. I trust you both can get settled?” He disappeared below deck.
I walked toward the cabin, and Reilley followed.
“I wish we were bunking together, Ember,” he said, slumping his shoulders. I didn’t respond and entered the cabin, shutting the door in his face.
Q&A With…
Tell us about you as a person.
I’m a bit eclectic. You can find me equally at home at a museum of natural history as walking through the woods or at a baseball game. I love learning about different cultures, traveling, learning foreign languages, watching foreign television, or listening to foreign music. I’m the type to get excited about little things, and my goal is to make real connections with people in this life.
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
I’m hesitant to choose a famous person I admire. I mean, what is he or she turns out to be a jerk? I’d rather experience a specific time period or place. I’d like to spend a day on Montmartre during the Belle Époque or maybe go to a historical world’s fair.
What’s the story behind your latest book?
After getting into steampunk, I really wanted to write a steampunk story. I don’t recall why I decided to put faeries in it, though I remember thinking very hard and the idea hitting me like a smack on the head. Once I had the two main characters clearly in my mind, it flowed fairly easily with not too many bumps in the process.
What is your writing process?
It depends on the story I’m writing. I like to write by the seat of my pants with only a vague idea of where the story is heading, but that only works with certain stories. For instance, that was fine for The Exiled Otherkin, but I had to plot everything ahead of time for my detective story. I prefer to be alone in my house with absolute silence and no interruptions when writing, though again there are exceptions. If I need to evoke a certain mood in a scene, I may listen to instrumental music of different genres.
Tell us about your main character.
My protagonist, Ember, is a half-Fae who is exiled from Faerie when her father dies. When readers first meet her, she is an apathetic sort. She has actively tried to cut off her emotions for many years in order to protect herself and those around her. The only person she’s really close to is her younger brother, Pika. She’s not opposed to being close to men physically, though emotionally is out of the question. She’s a strong person, able to take care of herself in most situations. It will take a soft, nonthreatening presence to catch her off guard.
If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role and why.
I don’t believe in choosing an actress before auditions. The best person for the role may be someone unknown.
What are you working on next?
The next story readers are likely to see is called Intended Bondmates:
Vampires may feed on humans, but nothing is as irresistible to them as fae blood.
Runa has long given up on being content with her life. Her only goal is to protect Mikhail until he awakens and gains his full magic. For the last thirteen years, ever since tragedy struck when they were children, she has protected him as was expected of his werewolf guardian. Though she has started looking for a mate, she can’t imagine what will happen once she’s free of Mikhail. But when he requests to be unbound from her before his awakening, she’s given the chance to return to her intended bondmate.
She expects a warm welcome from Konner, not foreseeing his bitterness at having been abandoned. Konner isn’t the only one who is bitter. His brother’s guardian, Rowan, has had to protect both faelings while she was with Mikhail.
It’s up to Runa to find a way to soothe these two demanding males if she hopes to make up for her past betrayal.
What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?
Stay active. Go to conventions, interact on social media, and support other authors.
What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?
My favorite book is The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. I’ve never read anyone who could weave so many plot yarns together in such a colorful tapestry as Dumas.
Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?
Talents? Probably not. There are a lot of things I work to be good at. I love to sing and knit.
You are given the choice of one super power. What super power would you have and why?
I’d want to be able have a way to make people understand each other’s intentions, almost like a universal language. I think the world would be a lot more peaceful if people tried harder to understand each other.
List 5 things on your bucket list:
In no particular order:
  1. Climb Machu Picchu on a llama
  2. Mount the Glastonbury Tor
  3. Meditate under a tree at a Himalayan Buddhist monastery
  4. Bathe in a hot spring in Japan
Too True to be Good
by Mary E. Thompson
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:  Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
His life was good…
Zach Bennett was content to go to work, hang out with his family and friends, and entertain a woman once in a while. As his family found love all around him, he was content to stay single. Unattached. Happy.
Besides, he had enough to worry about with a new chef breathing down his neck for his job.
She faced the truth every day…
Gianna Brooks always wanted to work with people. She saw enough growing up to know kids need all the help they can get. They deserved to be safe. Loved. Happy.
Which is why she’s determined to get her new client into a forever home.
But the truth isn’t always good…
The last thing Zach needs is a little girl showing up on his doorstep claiming she’s his. Her social worker hot on her heels, and demanding a place to stay, definitely doesn’t make it any better. Especially with Gianna’s curvy body and bedroom eyes, and his daughter’s sad sweetness, making him consider keeping both of them.
Gianna knows she should run. Zach knows he should send them away. But neither of them can resist the pull toward the other.
Zach pulled in a deep breath and sunk into the couch. Summer was curled up next to him, her little knees digging into his hip. He couldn’t believe it had only been a few days since she appeared. It was starting to feel like she’d been there forever.
Gianna padded into the room. Her hair was tied up, out of her face. He ached to tug it out of the ponytail it was in and run his hands through it, but instead he just smiled.
“She’s asleep already?” Gianna asked with a laugh.
Zach nodded. “Yeah. She had a busy day.”
“Your family has been wonderful with her.”
Zach grinned. His mom took to Summer like she’d always been a part of the family.
“They all love kids.”
“That’s obvious. Summer will be lucky to stay here.”
The thought of Summer staying still scared him, but he had to admit, he was getting used to it. She was a little presence in his life that would keep him on his toes. He was starting to get a true picture of who she was. He liked her. Maybe even loved her.
Was it possible?
Falling in love with a woman was impossible for Zach to imagine, even when Gianna settled on his other side, smelling irresistible from her shower. Lust, yeah. But love? Zach didn’t know love like he felt for Summer before. He never wanted to let her go. He felt like everything was right with her pressed against his side.
Then Gianna asked, “What are you going to do if she’s not yours?”
Mary E. Thompson grew up loving to read, like a good little girl. Many nights she would fall asleep with the flashlight still turned on as she hid under the covers trying to finish the last few pages of a book. As an adult, the light from her ereader means she doesn’t need a flashlight, but she still stays up way too late to finish a book.
When Mary’s not reading, she’s playing with her two kids or living out her own real life romance novel with her hubby. She has a weakness for chocolate, especially when it’s paired with peanut butter, and has been known to have a bad day just because there’s no chocolate in the house. Unless there’s wine. Then everything is okay.
Mary grew up in Buffalo, New York and swears she’s the only local to never ski or snowboard. Soccer was always her sport, with a couple adventures white water rafting and skydiving to keep things interesting. Mary moved to South Carolina for college but missed Buffalo every day. Yeah, she thinks she’s crazy, too. She somehow convinced her South Carolina born and bred hubby to return to Buffalo to raise their kids and live out their lives. He’s still not sure what he was thinking.
BLURB
Sienna Keller saw how men used her mother, and from an early age she swore she’d never allow it to happen to her. So when she meets smooth-talking billionaire Gavin Crane, who uses his connections to help her art career, she resolves to keep things strictly professional—no matter how gorgeous he is.
Gavin might be the son of the head of the Kavanagh organized crime family, but he wants no part of that life. It’s important to him to prove to Sienna that he’s a good guy. But when she winds up in the hospital with a gunshot wound, he is driven to exact revenge. His father agrees to provide security to watch over her as well as find the man who shot her, but at a cost—Gavin must come back into the family business.
As Sienna begins to let her guard down around Gavin, seeing the kind, caring man he’s always wanted her to see, his secrets begin to pile up. Has she done the one thing she vowed never to do—trusted her heart to the wrong man?
“You have your room keycard?”
She pulled it from her black leather clutch purse. He took it from her, and with a quick swipe at the lock, opened, and stood just inside the room with his back braced flush against the door, giving her a wide area to pass without them making contact.
Just then her cell phone rang. She took it from her purse to view the display and quickly connected. “Hey. Hold on a moment.” Pressing the phone at her chest, she looked at Gavin, whose attention was laser focused on the phone in her hand. “I have to take this.”
“I’ll see you in the morning,” he said with little inflection as he reached to his right and set the keycard on the entry table, then his steady stare held hers briefly. “Sleep well.” He stepped out. The door closed quietly behind him.
Sienna waited for the resounding clank of the door across the hall before she let go a breath, and her pulse managed to calm. Wow. She’d expected he’d ask to come inside. A small part of her, that perverse side of her, wanted him to, only so she could turn him away. Turning down his invitation wouldn’t have been just because she felt he was a player or a pain in the ass on occasion, it was something else, some kind of deeply embedded feeling that her mind fought against.
