Love, Lies, and Bad Guys

by Bill Blodgett

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romantic Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

When US Marshal Jay Stonewalker sees a possible terrorist comment in a chatroom frequented by anti-government radicals suggesting a nuclear threat to New York City, specifically the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, he can’t get it out of his mind. Against his boss’s orders he heads off to NYC to investigate on his own time. While there he follows a suspicious character into a secluded recess of the New York Subway system and foils what he believes is the terrorist event.  In a shoot-out with his suspect he’s wounded and calls the NYC PD for backup.  When he sees NYPD Detective KC Daviau and other uniformed officers slipping into the darkness from the subway platform he’s relieved, but to his surprise he’s met with resistance and disrespect by Detective Daviau. Against his objections, KC takes custody of the evidence and leaves the scene. When Jay asks an officer if she is always that way he’s told that, “Since her parents died, she’s been… let’s say… a little cold.”   When they are assigned to work the case together,  KC’s icy exterior soon begins to melt away as they begin to fall for each other, but KC has to hold back. She has a dark secret and knows he can’t ever know her truths because if he did he would hate her just as she hates herself for what she’s about to do.

I was surprised to see you had body art.”

It isn’t body art. It is my belief. I guess that’s why I don’t show them. It’s personal. They are of my Goddess, Mother Earth and the symbol of our tribe, the mighty eagle. The Mother Earth Tree Goddess demonstrates the circle of life. Where all things on land, air and water are connected. They are all one. If one element is removed, the tree will wither and die. We believe that it is the same for people. We must be as one or we will all eventually suffer. The Eagle is our symbol for bravery, something that is essential to take on such a derêp.” He saw her puzzled look and continued before she could speak. “Derêp is our word for job or chore. The Eagle is dedicated to protecting our tribe, which is a very difficult job. I use his image to remind myself each day that my task is difficult and not to falter. If you were just another chick, maybe I’d say they were body art, but I want to share that part of me with you.”

So…” she teased. “How many other chicks have admired your body art?”

He laughed lightly with maybe a hint of a gallows laugh, “Not as many as you might guess.”

I still live in the community where I met and married my lovely wife, Janice. Actually, she lived around the corner from me and we both ignored each other until our teen years when the hormone thing kicked in and we suddenly realized that the cute little girl skipping rope and that goofy boy riding a bike had both grown up.

We are the proud parents of April and Lindsay; both of whom are now married. April married Darren and they have two beautiful boys, Brian and Owen. Lindsay married Tim and they have two beautiful children: Kailyn and Evan.

I enjoy hiking, kayaking, camping with my family, golfing, making candles, and restoring my antique European sports car, a 1972 MGB.

They say to write from what you know, so I do. I write of love, life and relationships. In addition to the romantic plot we all expect from a Romance novel all of my books deal with a real-world issue as a sub-plot that we all have had to deal in some manner in life, but not in a preachy way. I find that including this sort of theme helps me identify with my characters on a personal level. My hope is that the reader will also feel that connection with my characters.

I have four other published novels. Dead Or A Lie and Saint’s Sword are vampire Romances. Unrequited is a contemporary novel with romantic elements and received 4 stars from Romantic Times Book Review magazine. The Last Prejudice is a family saga that deals with the issues a family must address when a family member comes out.

I have been a member of the RWA and the Central New York Romance Writers since 2004 and have held various posts in my local group. By day I am a construction inspector for an engineering company.

Tell us about you as a person.

I hate watching sports other than real games with my kids and grandkids participating! It was so out of the norm for guys in the construction field like myself, but being true to yourself is important to me. So, consequently, I got good-heartedly harassed by my fellow construction workmates because I never had anything to add to the discussion about the big game that was on the night before, but they got over it!

If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?

Growing up in the 1960’s I would have loved to hang out with Martin Luther King. Those days and his influence was so important. In my book, Unrequited, the most influential character is Riggs, an old black man and the son of a son of a slave. In those days maybe this character wouldn’t be accepted. When writing Riggs I sought out guidance from many of my black friend to make sure his character wouldn’t offend the very same people I wanted to complement. I even sought out advice on the word “black” to make sure it would be Okay. MLK broke ground that I hope will never be forgotten or abused.

What’s the story behind your latest book?

Love, Lies, and Bad Guys has a very interesting story behind it. The original title was, The Waldorf Astoria Connection, which is the sub-title now. Shortly after the attacks of September 11th we traveled to visit my daughter who lived in Waldorf, MD. My other daughter lived in Astoria, NY. While on a subway/train going into Washington, D.C. a young man got on the subway and was acting strangely by constantly checking his back pack. The See Something –Say Something signs were all over the subway. So the writer in me imagined a story about a mad bomber on a subway and as a shout out to my daughters I set the story in both Waldorf, MD and Astoria, NY!

What is your writing process?

I really need a secluded and quiet area to write. Music will just distract me and before you know it I’m singing along or drumming out the beat with a pencil or pen. My muse speaks to me as I settle down to go to sleep or when I’m driving the car. The next day I try to pound out those ideas for the next chapter in the book.

Tell us about your main character.

In Love, Lies, and Bad Guys two characters share the title as main character, Jay, a US Marshal, and KC, a NYPD detective. KC probably has the most to win or lose and probably the character most readers will be hoping makes it through this dilemma she’s got herself into. KC’s motivation is fueled by the death of her parent due to radiation exposure where they worked. She has vowed to not let this happen to any more innocent people.

If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role and why.

I liked Chris Pine from the new Star Trek movies. He has really intense eyes and can ramp up his emotions perfectly to match the scene he’s working in. I think this intensity would work well in the movie version.

What are you working on next?

I’m currently working on a sequel to Love, Lies and Bad Guys, subtitled, D.C. Under Siege. (Working title for now) It will take up where Love, Lies, and Bad Guys, The Waldorf Astoria Connection , leaves off, but Jay and KC only make cameo appearances to make room for a new couple of conflicted lovers!

What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?

I think Facebook and Twitter have a limited value unless you have a great number of followers. I think you have to put yourself in contact with a target rich environment like Good Reads, advertise on review sites like Long and Short Reviews and blog sites where avid readers visit like this site.

What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks has always been a favorite of mine.

Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?

Extraordinary talents? None! But I do have a special talent of making all sorts of candles. My favorite candle to make is a pillar candle with text or a picture on the outside that glows as the candle burns.

You are given the choice of one super power. What super power would you have and why?

Healing. Wow wouldn’t that be great! It would be spectacular to heal people and see all of the joy it could give to that person and their family and friends. With that who needs money or the ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound.

List 5 things on your bucket list:

  1. Travel planet earth and see all of the marvelous wonders that there is out there.
  2. Travel into space even if it was just to the moon. That’s been a childhood dream since the first Apollo Missions when we’d watch in awe as space craft took off.
  3. Live long enough to watch my Great Great Grandchildren grow up
  4. Have another 50 years with my childhood sweetheart/wife.
  5. Drive in a NASCAR race.

Where can readers find you on the web? www.billblodgett.com

Any final thoughts? Thank you so much for having me here. The questions were thought provoking and made me appreciate everything I have.

Yet, at that moment, there is a subtle shift in my being. As devastated and lost as I feel, a small part of me unfolds, almost releases. I can’t describe the feeling as it’s something I’ve never before experienced. I breathe, inhaling Ben’s scent, knowing it’s most likely the last time I am going to be this close to him. Then Ben moves his hand to the back of my head, pulling me towards him, passionately kissing me as we momentarily return to who we were. My body instinctively takes over as I languish in his taste, surrendering to him, if only for a few seconds. But I come to my senses and pull away. We are no longer the Jenna and Ben who are about to be married in two months. No, that couple is gone. It’s then that I do the unavoidable – I slowly remove the ring from my left finger and press it into Ben’s hand. After all, this is a family antique. It no longer belongs to me. I call for Sam, give Ben a final goodbye kiss on the cheek, and leave.

What are four things you can’t live without?

  1. Coffee
  2. Exercise of some sort – I get antsy when confined and need to move so I don’t annoy people
  3. Dogs – I cannot imagine life without our incredible dogs
  4. Dark chocolate peanut butter cups – I fool myself thinking that the organic ones are good for me

What is your favorite television show?

I love watching Friends. I think that I’ve seen every episode multiple times. In fact, when I’m home alone at night, I’ll watch rerun after rerun – sometimes till one in the morning. I recently had the “aha” moment that most likely my fondness for Friends connects to my childhood when I loved the Archie comic book series. The characters are almost identical. Plus, Friends has the most amazing cast. Wouldn’t you want them to be your friends with Monica, Phoebe, Rachel, Ross, Joey, and Chandler?

If you could be any character, from any literary work, who would you choose to be? Why?

Tough question. It would be very interesting to be Liz Gilbert in Eat, Pray, Love. What incredible life experiences she had – eating in Italy, praying in India, and loving in Indonesia. Plus, Julia Roberts, my all-time favorite actress, played her!

What have you got coming soon for us to look out for?

My next book is called The Healers. It’s quite different from Learning to Bend. In fact, it begins with a murder. More to come later.

What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

Amy Impellizzeri, author of Lemongrass Hope, The Truth About Thea, The Secret of Worry Dolls, and Why We Lie, encouraged me to attend her writers’ workshop. That was my introduction to writing (I’m not counting my freshman writing class at Lehigh University). She’s been a dear friend ever since and has served as my mentor.

It’s hard to pinpoint any particular book as influencing my writing, as I believe that my writing is still in its infancy and am unsure as to where it is headed. But I’d have to say that I love the intriguing story line of The Celestine Prophecy. Additionally, the characters are beautifully developed in A Gentleman in Moscow.

Jungle Beauty Goddesses Series: Pretty Blue, Aquatic Ball, Dirty Ball

by C. G. Sturges

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Fantasy, Erotica
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Jungle Beauty Goddesses “Pretty Blue” Book 1

BookCover_Book 1 Pretty Blue Ball

If you were given planet Earth as a gift to develop its life forms—would the world be a better place than it is today? What would your primary expectation and goal be for each human? Would you give them free will or plan their destiny? Would you demand that your humans worship you as their creator? Would you be available to assuage their every desire; and acquiesce to their demands, prayers, and wishes? Would you grow to resent them for living the life you imagined?

The Jungle Beauty Goddesses were free-spirited goddesses who enjoyed their freedom as the youngest children—and the last deities born to their parents—creators of the universe. Per the family tradition of being awarded a planet, the septuplets were given planet Earth as a gift for their birthday. Their siblings, also gods and goddesses of the universe since the beginning of time, warn them about the challenges of selflessness, power, worship, and divine duty.

The seven sisters struggle to maintain their own freedom as limitless beings, while sibling rivalry makes it difficult to accept their collective duty to fulfill the family obligation to the deity-hood as creators for planets.

The entire universe threatens to collapse due to their negligence and disobedience. They question the boundaries of their divine powers as they ponder whether it is possible to mold a being to be superior to its creator.

Jungle Beauty Goddesses “Aquatic Ball” Book 2

BookCover_Book 2 Aquatic Ball

Sometimes your worst nightmare is having everything you ever wanted. Upon visiting planet Earth, the Jungle Beauty Goddesses discover that the life forms they created are in danger of extinction, and an unforeseen dominant species has positioned itself to take dominion.

Unprepared and disillusioned about how to access their highest vibrational frequency; the Jungle Beauty Goddesses face their own demise.

The only way they can save themselves, their planet, and ultimately the universe is by managing to align with their deity powers and the wisdom of their highest selves in the face of their worst fears, disappointments, and betrayals.

Jungle Beauty Goddesses “Dirty Ball” Book 3

BookCover_JBG Book Dirty Ball 3

If you had the power to make anyone in the world fall in love with you—would you? Jungle Beauty Goddess Afar revokes her deity vows and takes her destiny into her own hands by participating in the life she was born to create for others.

Afar embraces the deepest, darkest nuances of her shadow self with brutality, dignity, and integrity. She brazenly unleashes the murkiest qualities of the human condition and leaves the chaos for her unsuspecting sisters to clean up or suffer the consequences of losing the planet given to them by their parents–creators of the universe.

Jungle Beauty Goddess Afar’s actions give a new meaning to the saying, “Hell has no fury like a woman scorned.”

Any weird things you do when you’re alone?

I talk to my Star Alien Being Gemstones and Crystal Skulls. I love them and they love me. They all have different energies, properties, and personalities. I wear them in the center of my bra most days. They highlight and exude different parts of my personality. When I want to be charismatic and devilish—I wear my peach aventurine. When I need protection, I wear my clear Black Tourmaline Rutilated Quartz Crystal Star Alien Being. When I need to get things done and be extremely organized, I wear my Citrine Star Alien Being. I also noticed that people treat me differently based on the alien being or crystal skull that I am wearing. Random people speak to me and are kind when I wear my African Jade Alien Being and my blue apatite skull. When no one is looking, in stairwells, elevators, when I am in the car alone… we have conversations about what is going on in my surroundings. At the end of the day, I try to remember to kiss them and thank them for accompanying for that day.

What is your favorite quote and why?

My Favorite quote in the universe is: “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.” By Dr. Seuss. I have been teaching Sociology and Psychology full-time for 20-years and I have this quote centered at the top of all of my courses syllabi. I encourage my students to be authentically truthful and respectful during class discussions because I believe as human beings we grow and evolve through each other’s truth. The richest, juicy, class insights and discussions have come from students sharing their truth. I tell my students that 2+2 = 4 all over the world, at every school—so the content that they are learning can be absorbed from home reading a book—but the collective energy of each student’s history, culture, and beliefs creates a unique learning experience that will never be duplicated ever again in human history. This is why it is essential to the learning process that my student’s share their honest opinions, outlooks, and beliefs about life.

VBT – FALSE LIGHT

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions.

Academic sleuths Erika Shawn, art magazine editor, and Harrison Wheatley, a more seasoned art history professor, set out to tackle a brain teaser. This time the couple—married since their encounter in Stolen Light, first in the series—attempt to crack the long un-deciphered code of art forger Eric Hebborn (1934-1996), which promises to reveal the whereabouts of a number of his brilliant Old Master counterfeits. (Hebborn, in real life, was a mischievous sort, who had a fascination with letters and a love-hate relationship with art authenticators. I felt compelled to devise a puzzler on his behalf!) After publication of his memoir, Drawn to Trouble, published in 1991, he encrypts two copies with clues to the treasure hunt. On each of the title pages, he pens a tantalizing explanatory letter. One copy he sends to an art expert; the second, he releases into general circulation. The catch: both books are needed to decipher the code.

When the books are at last united 25 years later, Erik and Harrison are enlisted to help unearth their hidden messages. But when several research aides are brutally murdered, the academic challenge leads to far darker mysteries in the clandestine world of art crime. As the couple navigate this sinister world, both their courage under fire and the stability of their relationship are tested.

Read an Excerpt

“You must try a crostini,” came a vaguely familiar voice from above. Harrison looked up, surprised to encounter the striking figure of Aldo Fabbri pressing forward a fair young tray-bearer, his hand at the small of her back.

Harrison’s love fest with Florence was instantly tarnished. “Good to see you,” he said nevertheless, extending his hand to Aldo before plucking an hors d’oeuvre of bread and chicken liver pate from the waitress’s tray. “Come sit down,” he suggested with a near-genuine smile.

“Certamente,” said Aldo. “But first we must request the wine—from the Fabbri vineyard, of course.” Aldo turned to the waitress. “Per favore, a bottle of the Chianti Classico riserva,” he slickly commanded, with a proprietary ogle. “As you might recall,” he said, turning back to Harrison, “it’s our signature wine, made from the Sangiovese grape. This year’s crop”—he glanced heavenward—“supremo!” With a nod, he dismissed the waitress, then pulled out a chair.

“I didn’t see you at the conference,” Harrison said, trying not to recollect in vivid detail Aldo’s play for Erika’s affections at their encounter in Tuscany over a year ago. The seduction attempt had taken place when he and Erika had visited the Fabbri estate as part of their art recovery mission. Erika had not succumbed to Aldo’s efforts, but her moment of hesitation had caused Harrison great consternation. What a presumptive asshole! he silently hurled at himself. Erika had been in the initial stages of breaking free of her mistrust in men because of what she was beginning to see in Harrison, and he had not shown her the least bit of empathy in response. “The lecture hall was rather crowded,” he said, thrusting his attention to the subject at hand. “Perhaps you were hiding in the rear?”

“Alas, I arrived too late to attend the talks,” Aldo said, smoothing back his coal black mane.

He’s lost the golden highlights, Harrison realized. Gives the bastard a less flighty look.

“However, I did hear your talk on Gericault was admirable—ah, here’s our wine,” Aldo noted, at the waitress’s approach.

The wine was uncorked; the glasses filled; hearty samples downed; Harrison’s authentic praise begrudgingly delivered.

“To a successful book tour!” Aldo sang, raising his glass. “Salute!”

As they clicked glasses, Aldo cocked his head, as if at a sound in the distance. “I’m wondering. Whatever became of that woman you were with—Erika Shawn was her name, una donna molto bella e special! As I recall, a free spirit finding herself tethered to Puritanism, or merely conflicted by it. Either way, a pity.”

“Tethered to me, if you must know,” Harrison said, as coolly as his clenched jaw would allow. “As my wife.”

“Ah, lucky man to have tamed her!” Aldo looked about. “But where is she? Another toast is in order!”

“Back home, in New York. Working.”

“Yes?” Aldo gave him a bemused smile. “Quite a long tether, I’d say.”

She sweeps her tongue over her lower lip and puckers up. I wrap my hand around the back of her neck and we both lean forward until our lips touch. I start off slow, keeping the pressure to a minimum. Her mouth is soft and warm and tastes sweet, like fruity gum. I stroke the tender skin behind her ear with the pad of my thumb. She sighs, then opens her mouth, inviting me in.

Holy freaking wow.

Our tongues meet in the middle and slide all over the place. My head pounds against my ribs so hard I wholly expect one to crack. She tastes so fine. I can’t breathe, but I don’t care. Oxygen is something we need on earth, and I’m clearly somewhere else. I brace my knee beneath the steering wheel to keep the lack of gravity from pulling me out of my seat. After all, this kiss doesn’t mean anything.

Over an hour later, covered in dirt and grime and smelling like cattle, Wade walked through the back door into the kitchen and was immediately met by a furious Allyson.

What the hell? Do you know people are already arriving? The wedding starts in fifteen minutes, Wade.” She stood in his way, her hand on her waist. Her purple dress clung to her small frame, ending just above her knees, and Wade couldn’t help think that Casey was a lucky man. Allyson was beautiful in a wholesome, girl-next-door kind of way. Her auburn hair, more red than orange, hung down in ringlets around her shoulders. Her cornflower blue eyes sparked with anger as he met her gaze and he wanted to take a step back, but refused to cower to someone standing barely over five feet.

Well?”

He lost the battle and took that step back. It didn’t matter. She took a step forward.

Cattle got out. I texted,” he explained, his eyes flitting around the kitchen. Something smelled really good, like apples and cinnamon, and his stomach rumbled. He was starving.

Lance and Casey have already brought everything over from Lance’s and they’ve dressed for the wedding,” she accused, pointing a finger at him. “You know you could have let Charlie handle this.”

His hackles up, he straightened and looked her in the eye. “He’s got some people fixing the fence right now, but no, I needed to handle this. Milton Randle tried to steal some of our cattle. A Dwyer needed to be there.”

Her shoulders sagged a little and she let out a huff. “Fine, but you owe Lance an apology. He thinks you don’t want to do this.”

Wade stared at her. “It’s a fake wedding. Of course I don’t want to do this.”

She pressed her lips into a thin line and looked at him hard. “Go get ready, Wade. And you better think about what you just said. This man is uprooting his life to ensure you and your brothers can keep your land. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never known anyone that kind. Have you?”

No. Definitely not. Properly chagrined, he nodded. “You’re right.”

Of course I am.”

Wade smiled. She may not be married to his brother yet, but she was already part of the family.

What?” she asked, obviously not quite ready to let go of the mad.

Casey’s lucky.”

She blushed and shook her hair. “Right again. Now go get ready. You’ve got maybe ten minutes, tops. Your suit is laid out in Casey’s room. Use his shower—your room is a mess with the move right now. I’ll stall for as long as I can, but you make sure you look and smell good when you come downstairs.”

Yes, ma’am,” he replied and watched her turn on her heels and leave the kitchen, mumbling something under her breath—something that sounded suspiciously like “idiot,” but he didn’t have time to dwell. He took the back stairs two at a time.

Thanks for being my guest Sarah. Tell us about you as a person.

I’d describe myself as an introvert, but due to my full time day job, I have to be an extrovert at the office. I suppose that’s true with a lot of people, though—we wear different masks at the office than we do at home.

I’m a mother and a (young!) grandmother. My children are grown and it’s wonderful to see them starting their own journeys as adults. I’m also a huge animal lover and have always had cats and dogs in my life. Right now, I have two cats, Mimi and Tiger, who definitely keep me busy.

I’m a Star Trek Voyager fan, and would choose to be Captain Janeway in another universe! My favorite color is pink, although that changes often. I love learning about ancient civilizations, reading romance, politics, and sci-fi, and I trying new recipes. I bake when I have writer’s block.

If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?

I’d love to meet Mary McDonnell and spend time getting to know her. She’s not only an amazing actress, but she’s a strong, independent woman that cares about people and stands up for her beliefs.

What’s the story behind your latest book?

The Twisted Oak is a faux marriage, western MM romance that takes place in the fictional town of Ruby, Wyoming. It’s about love and fighting for your family when you’re faced with possibly losing everything.

Wade’s been in love with his brother’s best friend for years, but one stupid incident from his past has kept him from pursuing the man of his dreams. When Lance is thrust into his daily life, they must work together and try to save the ranch.

What is your writing process?

Sometimes I listen to music—anything by Matchbox 20 pumps me up—but when I’m really engrossed in a story, I need quiet. No music, no TV—just the laptop and me. The quiet helps me focus. I tend to write early in the morning before I leave for my day job, usually around 5:00 or 5:30—after I’ve had my caffeine, of course!

Tell us about your main character:

Wade Dwyer loves the land. Other than when he was away at college, he’s lived on the family ranch his whole life. He’s close with his two brothers and wouldn’t dream of leaving, despite having a cold father who spewed hate. The ranch was still his home as long as his brothers were still there.

Wade’s a quiet man and somewhat introverted—people are not really his thing, however Lance definitely is. He’s tried to hold onto his heart for years, but he doesn’t think he can much longer—and he’s pretty sure he doesn’t want to.

If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role and why.

Anson Mount! He’s incredible and I loved him in Hell on Wheels. Rugged and sexy and able to play a brooding man. He would be my first pick.

What are you working on next?

I’m actually working on the sequel to The Twisted Oak right now. I loved the town of Ruby and the sequel follows some of the backstories, with a new love story.

What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?

I’ll be honest, I’m still learning about the marketing phase! But contacting review sites, offering ARCs, and utilizing social media as much as possible has helped me tremendously. There are also sites you can offer a free book which can help get your name out in front of people.

What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?

The Secret by Julie Garwood. I’ve read and reread that story so much, I know it by heart. But there’s just something that tugs at me about it. The romance, the history… it’s a beautiful story to get lost in.

Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?

During the fall, I volunteer at the Chiefs games to help raise funds for a local nonprofit. Each morning, I write up a quick little poem for the group to get them pumped. It’s usually only 16-20 lines, but I always try to include the name of the opposing team and it absolutely must rhyme. Think Dr. Suess meets Football. I wouldn’t call it a special talent, but it’s something I like to do and it revs us all up!

You are given the choice of one super power. What super power would you have and why?

FLYING! I would fly! Over the cities, among the clouds, diving down toward the grass and zipping back up again. As a child I had a recurring dream I could fly and the sense of weightlessness, the freedom as I soared, stuck with me.

List 5 things on your bucket list:

  1. Visit Scotland (and stay in a castle)
  2. Alaska Cruise
  3. Learn how to work with stained glass
  4. Attend a Star Trek Convention
  5. Take my grandson to Disney World (when he’s older!)

Poisoned Pawn

by David Siegel Bernstein

GENRE: Detective, Mystery

Cover_Poisoned Pawn

BLURB:

Caleb Jacobs is a man with a past. After serving on a failed dark ops assignment in Afghanistan, he leaves Marine Corps Intelligence to try to build a new life in Philadelphia as a homicide police detective.

Jacobs is happy, for a time, until he is assigned to solve the murder of Shannon Faraday. During the investigation, he is convinced the evidence points to him as the killer. He knows it is only a matter of time before other investigators see the same. He has no alibi and the clock is counting down.

Behind his partner’s back, Jacobs hires a private investigator named Lawrence Holmes. The PI is an irritation to the police, but he is unmistakably brilliant. And, many powerful people in the city owe him favors. Holmes is a bit odd. He insists on calling Jacobs Watson but claims to never have heard the name Sherlock. Jacobs can live with this kind of crazy as long as together they find the real killer.

They quickly link the murder to a series of seemingly unrelated crimes occurring throughout Philadelphia, and Jacobs becomes convinced the murder is related to the truth of what had happened during his time in Afghanistan. Old secrets have come back to haunt him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
I felt like shit for having to hire a private investigator, especially one who was most likely insane. Still, I couldn’t deny that his type of crazy got results. Reluctantly I handed over an envelope to the man sitting on the sun-bleached bench.
He opened it. Satisfied with my offering, he slid it into his jacket. “Ah, Watson,” he said. “Good to see you again.”
I shook my head and dropped onto the bench next to him. “My name is Jacobs. Caleb Jacobs,” I said, hoping the reminder might stick this time.
He turned to me. “Did you say something?”
I sighed. “No, Holmes.”
If I wasn’t desperate for his help, I’d strangle him. Of course my superiors at the Philadelphia Homicide Unit wouldn’t appreciate that. But I wondered if a cop hiring a private investigator was any worse of a violation. I needed Lawrence Holmes for his connections and unique viewpoint, things my PHU colleagues couldn’t provide. He might not be the fictional character he played at, but he was a talented PI.
AUTHOR Bio and Links
To support his writing addiction and excessively extravagant lifestyle, David Siegel Bernstein, PhD, is a data scientist who consults as a forensic statistician. That sounds really boring until you realize that his clients include the US National Security Agency (NSA), the Secret Service, the FBI, the Department of Justice (DOJ), and a host of other acronymonious agencies who cultivate exciting and shadowy reputations. Alas, those reputations are mere facades that disguise the real reason these organizations exist, which is to keep him entertained and fed.
When David wants a break from this spellbinding work, he writes. His fiction credits encompass two novelettes and sixty shorts. His nonfiction has appeared in newsletters, popular blogs, academic journals and he is the author of the book Blockbuster Science: The Real Science in Science Fiction.
He lives within the shadow of Philadelphia with his wife, Michelle, two children, Seth and Gwendolyn, and a dog named Ringo Biggles Woofington.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

David, thanks for being here today. Tell us about you as a person.

I want to start by thanking the CA Milson for taking the time and space for this interview.

To support my writing addiction and excessively extravagant lifestyle, I am a data magician—only without the magic. Math, machine learning, and science are my tools. I’m a forensic data scientist who specializes in looking for patterns in data that reveal patterns in human behavior. I know that sounds really boring until you realize that my company’s clients include the US National Security Agency (NSA), the Secret Service, the FBI, the Department of Justice (DOJ), and a host of other alphabet agencies who cultivate exciting and shadowy reputations. Alas, those reputations are mere facades that disguise the real reason these organizations exist, which is to pay my salary.

I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and taught martial art classes at the university where I did my undergraduate work. This is the style of fighting Poisoned Pawn main character Caleb Jacobs uses in fight scenes. I have a kick-ass comic collection (which makes me popular with the ladies). And, I enjoy a good game of chess.

To go with my tough guy motif, I own a Toy Poodle named Ringo Biggles Woofington.

If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?

If I could choose anyone in history, I would like to hang out with physicist Richard Feynman. He would be a lot of fun to talk to. I would love to hear some of his legendary stories in person. It would also be interesting to get his take on the current state of science. If I’m limited to choosing among the living, I’d hang with David Tennant. I’m a huge Dr. Who fan.

What’s the story behind your latest book?

The modern mystery screams for a thriller component mashed up with sexual tension. Poisoned Pawn yells back with a fast-paced story loaded with femme and homme fatales.

It is also about the perfect crime and getting away with it… almost.

What is your writing process?

My process is a messy one. I write when I have the free time and in almost any location. To make matters worse—for fiction—I do not write from an outline. I let the story unfold organically. The characters usually tell me what’s needs to be done. That said, I do workshop parts in a writing group I lead.

On the other hand for my nonfiction books such as Blockbuster Science: The Real Science in Science Fiction, I do create an outline and spent part of each day conducting research before pen to paper (cursor to screen).

Tell us about your main characters

Poisoned Pawn is the story of Caleb Jacob, a man with a dark past. After serving on a failed dark ops assignment in Afghanistan, he leaves Marine Corps Intelligence to try to build a new life in Philadelphia as a homicide police detective.

In this novel, he is forced to partner up with a private investigator named Lawrence Holmes. The PI is an irritation to the police, but he is unmistakably brilliant. And, many powerful people in the city owe him favors. Holmes is a bit odd. He insists on calling Jacobs Watson but claims to never have heard the name Sherlock.

If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead roles and why.

David Siegel Bernstein as Caleb Jacobs (okay, maybe not). How about my look-alike Chris Hemsworth? (okay, again maybe not). I think Karl Urban or Eric Bana would be good choices. As for Holmes, I’d go with Nathan Lane. With this combo, viewers would get a good feel for both the darkness of the story and the humorous moments.

What are you working on next?

I’m working on the next book in the Caleb Jacobs series titled The Queen’s Gambit. A frighteningly skilled assassin hires Jacobs to find her latest assignment and to then protect him from her.

I’m also working on a science fiction novel set on a planet where time is literally a currency. The wealthy live for hundreds of years in dewy youth while the poor are geriatric.

What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?

Build a platform before your book comes out. This makes it much easier to get the word out when the project is complete. Then, by hook or by crook, find a way to get onto C.A. Milson’s blog!

What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse.

Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?

I can be very annoying. It is a gift.

You are given the choice of one superpower. What superpower would you have and why?

To be able to speak any language upon hearing or reading it. This includes computer programing languages.

List 5 things on your bucket list:

The PG version bucket list

  1. To have a bestseller (and have it made into a movie)
  2. Travel to Japan
  3. Get a Tattoo
  4. Have a secret admirer
  5. Play my guitar with a band on stage

Any final thoughts?

Why do you ask? Am I dying? I am too young for final thoughts. I hope your thoughts are on the best way to get a copy of Poisoned Pawn.

Phoebe needs a second chance at life.

In the aftermath of the devastation from her failed marriage, Phoebe returns to her old stomping grounds to open her own bed and breakfast. Starting over is the bravest thing she’s ever done – or so she thinks. But opening her front door to find a blast from her past on her front porch changes all that. The teenager she’d once known has become a jaw-dropping, dominant man in his prime.

He wasn’t looking for a relationship until she blazed back into his life.

Graham runs his own construction business, remodeling homes, and building brand new ones. When his buddy gives him a lead on a new project, he never expects to run into Phoebe, the woman he shared a single kiss with eons ago. Nor is he prepared for the Dominant in him to stake his claim before the end of their first meeting. He wanted her in high school but there had been too wide a gulf separating them. Now, Graham will stop at nothing until he makes her his. But there are larger forces at work, attempting to tear them apart.

When everything Phoebe holds dear becomes a target, Graham will risk it all for the one woman he knows he can never live without.

Publisher’s Note: This steamy second chance romance contains elements of power exchange. While it is the second in the Crescent City Kings series, it can be enjoyed independently.

Read an Excerpt

She opened the door to the small groundskeeper’s house, which was really nothing more than a glorified pool house. It was four hundred square feet, little more than a studio apartment in size. The only thing enclosed was the tiny bathroom. But she had spruced her home up as best she could, painting the walls a fresh, light powder blue and had put her bed near the window to catch the early morning sunlight.

There was room enough for her couch and a small television, plus the eat in kitchen with her small, pine dinette set. She’d painted the walnut cabinets an eggshell white, giving the place a farmhouse look. Daisy made a beeline toward her water bowl and dog bed up against the far wall.

“This is where you’re living?” Graham studied her place without judgement, his gaze assessing the space.

It might not be much, but it was home and, best of all, hers. “Yep. I don’t need a lot of space or things. Most days I will be over at the main house from sunup until sundown, at least until I can afford to hire help.”

If things worked the way she hoped, she would have a hostess and servers for the dining room. Phoebe already had her eye on a waitress at the nightclub to entice to come work for her. While she was confident in her abilities, it would be a juggling act to cook and serve meals in the dining room at the same time. At first, there was no way around it and she would be forced to manage it somehow. But she hoped this place would be successful enough that a few months after opening, she would have the available budget to hire help.

“Have a seat. Would you like a cup of coffee? And I have some croissants on the table there, just baked them fresh this morning,” she said, rather thrilled to be playing hostess. Phoebe enjoyed cooking and had found early in life that she had a knack for it. But this was a new croissant recipe she was testing out, and she was interested to see Graham’s reaction.

“It’s barely ten.” He smiled as he sat, facing her and the kitchen.

“I tend to be an early riser. Always have been.”

“I’m the same.”

Using one of her good mugs, she served him a steaming cup of coffee, then brought over all the accoutrements on a wooden tray: sugar, cream, and sugar substitute. She noted that he took his coffee black as night, but he slathered the croissant with her homemade jam.

“Mmm, oh my god.” He groaned, and the sound pinged low in her belly. “You made this?” Graham asked, looking at her and then back at the pastry as if he had died and gone to heaven.

“Yep.” She expelled a breath. The new recipe appeared to be a hit. Graham ate the croissant with relish. Pinpricks of satisfaction flowed through Phoebe. She slid into the seat across from him as he put a thumb covered in jam into his mouth and sucked it off.

Her girly bits throbbed at an unexpected blast of desire that struck her system like a thunder bolt. It had been an unconsciously sexy move on his part. It wasn’t like he was attempting to get into her pants. He was here to earn a potential payday, and work. Yet when he glanced her way with sublime satisfaction in his eyes, across the small expanse of her pine dinette table, her insides quivered—and not with fear.

She needed to shut the gate closed and seal it tight. Phoebe didn’t do relationships anymore. That wasn’t in her plans for her life any longer.

No matter how sinful the packaging happened to be.
