THE MOMENT BETWEEN
by Gareth Frank

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Psychological Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB

After four years of mourning, Doctor Hackett Metzger is determined to stop letting his wife’s death control his life. He is finally beginning to live again, but his recovery leads to an unexpected fight for his own survival and startling revelations about what happens to all of us in The Moment Between.

Hackett, a brilliant neurologist, is a skeptic. He doesn’t believe he will one day be reunited with Jean, or dwell with God in heaven. What he does believe is that he should have seen the warning signs of her heart attack; he should have saved her. He also cannot accept the possibility that his clinical study of near death experiences could prove the existence of a conscious afterlife. When Hackett falls for the mother of a patient, grief finally begins to fade. But he has no idea his new love is hiding her dangerous past. Will Hackett’s damaged spirit endure another heartbreak?

EXCERPT

In those first months, he tortured himself with the notion that Jean’s voice had been real. He was sure that she had been present while he tried to save her. He prayed that she lived on in death, hoped that even as he failed, she had a soft landing on the other side. Her voice became his torture.

And so he understood death as he never had before. He understood grieving and pain. He understood what it meant to miss someone and to know that he would never see that person again. He understood loneliness. Most of all he understood the foolish and painful illusion that life might somehow continue. There was no voice. Jean had not talked to him from beyond. He had tortured himself from within. She was dead. He had learned to accept that cold hard reality. Anger had settled into the dark hole that was his memory of that day, poisoning his spirit. For weeks he stayed home from work, for months the blackness held him captive, until slowly he emerged into the world once more. His sanity hinged on his acceptance that Jean’s voice had been an illusion. Death was just death.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gareth, tell us about you as a person.
Some people live life on automatic pilot. They do what comes easy. I like creating new chapters in life and becoming proficient at new things. That’s one of the big reasons I became a writer. When I retired seven years ago, my entire portfolio of creative fiction could be held in a child’s notebook. I knew how much work it was to write a novel, but I also knew that if I challenged myself I could do it. That’s a lesson I learned early in my career as a union organizer and administrator. When I was in my late twenties, I sat in one meeting after another watching people duck new or challenging assignments. Being a little nervous, that’s what I, too, did at first. I quickly learned that gets you nowhere. I decided that I would volunteer as much as I could, especially if it was something new. It has proven to be an invaluable approach to both work and life in general.
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
I have always been fascinated by Albert Einstein, for both his intellect and humanity. I have even included a little popular physics in my psychological thriller, The Moment Between. But, it wouldn’t be him. I would be lost if he talked physics, and I think he might be a little boring in person. I’d take another physicist, Richard Feynman. He was brilliant, but also a hoot. He absolutely loved music, played practical jokes on stiff shirts in the academic world, and even liked to think through his theories while sipping orange juice in a strip club. Read his books, especially Surely Your Joking, Mr. Feynman.
What’s the story behind your latest book?
Steven King once said: “(The writer’s) job isn’t to find ideas but to recognize them when they show up.”
For me, the idea for my novel showed up in the mail. I received a Christmas card that mentioned the death of a friend’s brother and alluded to his wife being the murderer. A very strange Christmas card, indeed. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. When I called my friend and asked what had happened, I found out that, as they say, fact was stranger than fiction. I used the woman in question to create one of my characters. Some people think I created a monster. The truth is, real monsters are often real people. That was the genesis of my storyline.
The theme of my book grew out of my fascination with near-death experiences, and what they tell us about the conscious mind. Polling has shown that about 70 percent of Americans believe in some sort of afterlife. We all struggle between two competing natures, the logical and the spiritual. Where we lie between those two points largely defines who were are. That dualism lies at the heart of my book.
The Moment Between is a psychological thriller that brings death to life.
What is your writing process?
I know it’s bad for my posture, but I grab my laptop, get comfortable on my couch and write. Like Albert Einstein who often sat in his bathtub lost in thought hour after hour, I can hang out on the couch writing all day.
Tell us about your main character.
After four years, Doctor Hackett Metzger is a neurologist still recovering from his wife’s death. He is a likeable, brilliant doctor and also a bit of an awkward nerd. His attempts to find romance and companionship are comical at best. He is also a skeptic with respect to the afterlife. For him, death is too painful. To hold out false hope might break him. Even though he considers near-death experiences to be little more than hallucinations, he is talked into supporting a medical study of people who suffer cardiac arrests and are resuscitated. At the same time, he is charmed by a woman with a dangerous past.
If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role and why.
Paul Giamatti would be the perfect Hackett.
What are you working on next?
The working title of my next novel is Torn Skin. The name is taken from a song written by Jonny Pirpal, a punk rockin, freight train hoppin loner who attained rock and roll fame in the nineties, only to lose everything in a single day. Syeira, a mystic who quite literally saves lives by being in the right place at the right time, has also become a loner though for very different reasons. They meet as Jonny’s past is catching up with him.
What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?
I read a quote from an Indian businessman. I have no idea why he was being quoted about writing, but his words stuck in my head. “Writing is like prostitution. First you do it for love, then for a few close friends, then for money.”
I have no idea why he thought prostitution was something you do with a few close friends, or why he thought writer’s write for money. The truth is, one million books are published in America each year, so getting the word out is hard. The most important word in a writer’s vocabulary has to be perseverance. First create a buzz among friends, family, coworkers and other acquaintances, then look for every opportunity to spread out. Who knows when the big break could come.
What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?
It’s a toss-up. The Cemetery Keeper’s Wife, by Maryann McFadden or Beartown by Fredrik Backman.
Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?
I wrote a novel. That should count. 🙂
You are given the choice of one super power. What super power would you have and why?
The ability to make people laugh. Laughter can cure depression, make other illnesses just a little more bearable, lead to a happy marriage and make every day a little better. It’s a lot better than shooting fire from your fingertips.
List 5 things on your bucket list:
  • See Petra (Jordan).
  • Take a bike tour in Spain.
  • Star in one of my son’s movies (Joseph Frank, writer and director of Sweaty Betty).
  • Stick around this world for a long time watching my grandchildren grow up.
Meet Layla James, your typical smart and snarky chick—except for the whole succubus thing. After nearly a millennium on Earth, Layla’s settled down in a boring life in Palm Springs, until a smoking-hot hunter comes to arrest her for murder. But Layla knows the rules—she’d never kill someone and incite the wrath of The Powers That Be.
Elijah Daines is a hunter, maintaining the balance of good and evil in the mortal realm, his power stronger than any hunter she’s ever encountered. Plus, he’s a seriously sexy distraction. Too bad he’s accused her of a crime she didn’t commit.
As the killer continues a murder spree that not only frames Layla but threatens to expose the existence of supernatural creatures to humans, Layla and Elijah team up to investigate. Hopefully, they can fight off their escalating attraction for each other long enough to exonerate her and stop the murder madness.
He edged nearer the counter. I, or maybe my succubus, decided on a whim I would not be intimidated by his power. I wasn’t sure where my sudden courage came from. He had to have sensed my succubus signature. We weren’t a violent race when we controlled our urges. I’m Queen of Control over here. I’m sure he knows I won’t hurt him. Right?
But why is he here? Something must be wrong.
With every step he took closer, I had a better look at him. His dark hair was in slight disarray and his crystal blue eyes scoured my face. He towered over me in every sense of the word. My stomach dipped.
He and Jolene should go back-to-back so I can get an accurate measure of his height.
I shook away my thoughts of him. Given his disapproving glare, he came here on a mission. Greek god or not, he was still a hunter, and I—
I was a product of evil, aka something he hunts.
“Succubus,” he growled. One little word filled with eons of unabashed hatred. It vibrated through me. All hopes of him wanting a new bathroom paint color vanished. No, this visit wouldn’t be pleasant, not at all.
Perhaps I could seduce him. Hell, he could do me right on the floor of aisle nine next to the light fixtures, if it kept him from killing me. I bit my lip. Hunters weren’t typically susceptible to succubi charms. A failed attempt of Aphrodisia could earn me more problems.
I released a breath. Some buried-deep, natural instinct rolled through me again, and I decided to stand my ground. I stood straighter and barked back, “Hunter.”
The room was silent except for the echoing sound of Nona’s vintage alligator peep-toed pumps as they slammed across the floor, as she charged in.
“You are late!”
“Now Glenda,” Nona excitedly exhaled. “You know I told you I had to go to Pointe Richmond, today? My favorite store was having their fifty percent off annual sale.”
Surprise and embarrassment ran a swift race across Glenda’s face. “Did you go to Ancient Ways? Oh, I’d forgotten.”
Nona hurried over and thrust a bag in Glenda’s hand. “See, I got you something.”
“Thank you,” Glenda muttered, with an apologetic tone in her voice.
Nona turned and made a beeline across the room. “Oh, and here’s yours Consuelo,” she said excitedly, handing her a bag.
Nona sighed heavily. “For some reason, the traffic on Highway 80 was ridiculous today.”
“Thank you, Nona,” Consuelo smiled and let her eyes settle on Nona’s for a second before she nodded agreement. “It’s true, about the traffic being heavy on Highway 80, today. Just this morning I saw it on the news, something to do with a big rig turning over,” she said, with a heavy Spanish accent.
Nona leaned in close and whispered. “Thanks for having my back Consuelo. By the way, I picked you up some that Herb man’s best sage, the one you like.”
“Excellent,” Consuelo replied with a look of surprise. “You must have read my mind. I was almost out.”
Having survived quite a few birthdays and had some interesting experiences, I wrote them down. That’s how “My Wonderful Wobbly Life” was conceived. It was nearly born in 2004, but decided to hang on until 2018 to become ‘Born again‘ Alleluia!!!!
Chapter 1 – SURVIVAL
“I’ve changed my mind! I’ve changed my mind! I don’twant to go.”
I have a vague memory of making this cry from a railway carriage as I was stolen from my parents by authoritarians.
I was five years old when the authorities decreed I had to be placed in a home for children. Their decision was final and all avenues of appeal against it were exhausted when my father, to soften the blow of parting, talked me into what he described as an adventure.
It was not until the train began to move and the realisation came I was leaving my parents forever, that I made my plaintive cry:
“I’ve changed my mind!”
When I arrived at the home my world changed, never to be the same again. My loving mother and my fun-filled father were gone and in their place were grown-ups I did not know. I did not understand what was going on. There were lots of crippled children, but why was I there with them? Okay, I couldn’t walk very far without falling over. I shook uncontrollably most of the time for no apparent reason. I couldn’t speak very clearly. But, I’d been like this all my life, for me it was normal. So, what was I doing here? “
INTERVIEW
If you could apologize to someone in your past, who would it be?
There is no point in apologizing in retrospect, because the incident that took place does not have the same significance now time has washed over it. Ergo, there is no-one to be given an apology.
If you could keep a mythical/ paranormal creature as a pet, what would you have?
Pegasus the winged horse. Then I could invent and indulge in a new hobby of ‘Drone Round-up!’
How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?
That is easy to answer. I don’t let them live my life for me.
What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?
I cannot recall ever having been given any advice about writing in general. Any advice I have been given has usually concerned specific points being presented in an article I was writing. However, since publishing my book and trying to write another, I have been given a platinum piece of advice. Which I share with you, “Write like a Reader!”
Are the experiences in this book based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
The title of my book being “My Wonderful Wobbly Life,” gives a big clue to the answer of this question. It is a memoir of my life, outlining the trials and tribulations of coming to terms with being disabled in an abled world. The problems of getting an education, finding and keeping employment, being accepted in society and by the opposite sex were difficult to overcome. ‘The rows were hard to hoe, but the plant of life grew to maturity.’
EXCERPT
An image of Dawn’s mangled, bloody body filled my thoughts, and I stopped sorting through my art supplies. It had happened just before Christmas. There was poor Dawn, distraught over her break-up with Ian, wearing my jack, and waiting in Geoffrey’s car in the alley behind The Stage.
They thought Dawn was me.
They- The Inner Circle, Geoffrey’s first coven-wanted him back.
Marco, his sire, was the head honcho there, and I its prime the coven had been quite large with a very strong presence in the community. As the years passed, it prominence had faded, but Marco still clung to his power. Geoffrey said that the older Marco got the more manipulative, abusive, and obsessive he became. It didn’t make sense. Marco had exiled him, and now he wanted his prized son back, even though Geoffrey’s twin, Alexander, was part of the Inner Circle. To top it off, they wanted me dead. Why? Because I came between Marco and Geoffrey? Was it because of the Link?
Shh, my love, said Geoffrey’s sweet, cool voice though the Link.
But I couldn’t keep my thoughts from whirling. Nerdy Chase Montgomery, my neighbor, was Geoffrey’s Guardian- a scholar of immortals, more or less. He was assigned to watch over Geoffrey, but he had trouble staying close to him. So he had followed me instead, filling my apartment with micro-cameras and audio pickups. When Geoffrey finally confronted Chase, I got a look inside his apartment-and at his computer screens. Nearly every inch of my apartment was under surveillance.
How fast everything had happened! Only four months ago, I started working at Ashleigh’s bar, The Stage, which was now the hottest club in Seattle. Geoffrey and his family which made up his band, The Darkness, were the house band there, and he and his family lived what they jokingly called an “alternative lifestyle”- even for vampires. Believing our human lives were too short as it is, they found other sources for their drug of choice, blood.
By the way, did I say reality bites? Yeah it does. I guess that comes with the territory when the one you love is a vampire.
Book description
The Childless Ones - ebook Cover CORRECTED copy
TWO WORLDS…TWO ALTERNATING NARRATIVES…A REALIST RELATIONSHIP DRAMA…AN EPIC FANTASY…
In the “real world,” we open with Jack Ampong just leaving a prostitute when he receives a phone call that his wife Sarah has been assaulted. With this incident as a jumping off point, we watch as Jack and Sarah deal with past guilt and regrets as well as their own ongoing struggles with relationships, infertility and parenthood.
In the “fantasy world”—ostensibly written by Jack—a bureaucratic Empire rules with an iron fist…an ancient sect of sorcerers have extraordinary powers but are cursed with the inability to have children… and a race of beings called the Mandrakar live lives one quarter the length of normal people, but have memories that are passed on to future generations through the last of an ancient breed of tree. Along the way, we meet a crotchety governor who just wants to do right by his granddaughter, a hardboiled, lesbian, dwarf detective who just wants another drink, and a villainous sorcerer whose motives form one of the central mysteries of the story.
Throughout the book, the two narratives echo off one another—often in surprising ways—ultimately commenting on the very nature of storytelling itself.
Dedicated career girl Holly Grant has no time for romance. She doesn’t need a man to complete her, thank you very much. Building Grant Realty takes all of her time and attention. If she can close a deal for Turnaround Farm, her business will take off like a rocket. Her first problem is that Jeb Wakefield doesn’t want to sell his farm, and her second problem is Jeb’s grandson Dan, the finest looking man Holly’s ever seen.
Read an Excerpt:
As everyone started to eat, the tension at the table lessened. They ate in silence for a moment before Teddy nudged Dan’s elbow. “Hey, Dan, can I ask you something?”
“Yes, what is it?”
“Are you sleeping with Holly?”
The furor that broke out reminded Holly of the noise at a high school football game. Nikki’s voice rose above the commotion as she tied to justify Teddy’s little bombshell first to Dan and then to Holly. The noise made Michael cry, and when Teddy saw his brother crying, he started to roar himself. Without another word, Dan grabbed Teddy by the hand and carried him kicking and screaming to the restroom.
“Is he going to spank Teddy?” quavered Holly. The child was incorrigible, but she didn’t want Dan to hurt him.
Nikki shrugged. “I don’t know, but I doubt it.”
“You don’t seem too upset by it.”
“No, he’s mad at Teddy, but he won’t hurt him. Dan’s good with the kids. He’d be a great father, Holly, and his kids would probably be real cute.”
“I’m su…su…sure he would…they would,” Holly stammered.
“Yes, and one day he’ll own Turnaround. That’ll be a nice thing to hand down to his children, won’t it?”
Thankfully, Dan and Teddy returned to cut this awful conversation short.
I’ve been writing since 2001 when my son asked me to proofread a book he’d written. I figured if he could write a book, so could I. My first published novel, A New Leaf, was the winner of the 2003 Timeless Love contest. If I wasn’t sold on writing before, that did it. I’ve been writing ever since and don’t have any plans to stop. Frankly, I don’t think I could even if I wanted to. Writing is a strange compulsion that drives me to spend long hours in front of a keyboard when I could be doing important things like napping or eating chocolate. My house isn’t dusted as often, I rarely cook, and who cares if the laundry gets done or not. Yeah, no doubt about it, I’m addicted.
A gripping romantic suspense of betrayal, hope and love.
Ex-military officer, Brad Jordan is rebuilding his life with the help of his boisterous Border collie, Whiskey. After helping Jessie out of a tight spot, he discovers a kindred spirit in the ambitious ballerina.
But with the sudden attention of an unwanted admirer, Jessie’s life begins to spin out of control. Called back to her family home in country New South Wales due to her father’s unforeseen illness, she is torn between career and family. EXCERPT
There she was, bolting up the hallway towards him like she did every time he returned. All amber eyes and happy face, she danced and pranced, speaking an exuberant welcome as best she could through her doggy larynx.
“How’re you doing, Whiskey? You miss me?” Reaching down, he rubbed his black and white Border collie’s lopsided ears. “You are the most beautiful girl I know. Come on, let’s chow down.” As he strode down the narrow hall of his weatherboard cottage, he weaved from side to side so as not to step on her paws. “So, what did you get up to this evening? Been protecting the castle?” He opened the fridge door and Whiskey shoved her nose in where she knew her dinner waited. BJ grabbed a bag of beef brisket bones and tossed it on the kitchen bench. He’d left the lights on out of habit, rather than for Whiskey. If there was light around him, the darkness within was somehow easier to bear.
He scanned the back yard, checking the perimeters that he’d planted with impenetrable, skyward-reaching bamboo. He never knew what he expected to find. Maybe he hoped it was all a bad dream and that everything would return to the way it was. But nothing would be the same again. Regret tore at his heart as he tore open the plastic bag of bones. “Here you go, girl. Take it outside. I’ll grab a beer and join you.”
Q&A With …
Diane, thank for being here. Tell us about you.
I was born under the western zodiac of Gemini and the Eastern zodiac of the Fire Rooster. I am a 31/4 and I like security, stability and process. I believe in the joy of life, the passion of love and knowing that ‘the truth will set us free’. I love dancing, entertaining, educating and anything that bubbles or sparkles. French champagne is a favorite 🙂
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
Since he’s the protagonist of the greatest story ever told, I’d hang out with Jesus Christ to get his side of the story.
What’s the story behind your latest book?
Retribution is my way of paying tribute to the people who have endured more than most. Those who have lived hellish childhoods, those who have fought for our freedom, those who have experienced unimaginable trauma and those who may never recover from their suffering. With the overarching theme of forgiveness and redemption, Retribution pays homage to the human condition in all its glory and misery.
What is your writing process?
I play different playlists which relate to the story I’m writing. Since Retribution is set in Australia, I listened to a lot of great Australian bands, and particularly the song, Great Southern Land, when I was writing the hero’s POV
Tell us about your main character.
Jessie Hilton is a ballerina. She’s tough, disciplined and ambitious, and driven to achieve her dreams, even against the worst odds. As a lover of the Australian Ballet and having access to past students and dancers, I created Jessie, an Australian Ballet soloist. Soloist is the final step before becoming a principal dancer, which is the highest position in any ballet company. For those who have the talent, dedication and grit to make it, the transition from soloist to principal is a career highlight. The incomparable Amber Scott from the Aussie Ballet is who I used for inspiration. https://australianballet.com.au/artist/amber-scott
If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role and why.
I modelled Brad Jordan, my hero in Retribution, on Chris Hemsworth. He would be perfect casting if a movie were ever to be made of the book. In so far as Jessie Hilton, my prima ballerina heroine, it would probably be Natalie Portman since she did such a brilliant job in the movie Black Swan.
What are you working on next?
My next book, Island of Secrets will be published on 14 October. It’s an epic love story that will make you laugh, cry and believe in the power of love. It spans forty years and is set on a privately-owned island off the coast of Maui. Currently, I’m writing the Diana Daniels Murder Mystery series. The first is nearly finished with another two story ideas ready to go. So, the end of 2018 and 2019 looks big on all fronts.
What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?
Become self-educated and learn from others who have achieved what you want.
What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?
Too many to choose.
Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?
I love the being on the stage dancing, performing and speaking.
You are given the choice of one super power. What super power would you have and why?
The power of universal insight
List 5 things on your bucket list:
  1. Live a good life
  2. Laugh every day
  3. Be healthy, wealthy and wise
  4. Be free of negativity
  5. Be at peace…always
Any final thoughts?
There is more going on than we can ever imagine 😊
